5 Ways to Celebrate Hanukkah at Kenyon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kenyon chapter.

The cold winter weather has undoubtedly settled into Gambier, and the semester is almost over. This can only mean one thing: It’s almost time for the winter holidays! It’s one of my favorite times of year, where everyone gets festive and you celebrate with all of your friends and family. However, this year, Hanukkah starts while many of us are still on campus on December 16. Don’t worry, though, because there are lots of ways to celebrate the holiday at Kenyon.

1. The Menorah

Now, I know that Kenyon doesn’t allow any candles in dorm rooms or appartments, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a menorah! There are several different types that don’t require candles. For example, you can get a cute wooden one where you put a wooden flame on each candle for each light (like this one). Or, if you want something that lights up, you could get an electric one, like this one.

2. Making Latkes

Hanukkah isn’t complete without enjoying these delicious potato pancakes. If you want to try cooking some on campus, you can buy a box of mix and use this recipe in one of the many kitchens on campus. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can try making them from scratch, with this recipe.

3. Playing Dreidel

Once you’ve got your Kenyon-safe Menorah and some yummy latkes, it’s time to play some dreidel! Use one from home or buy one in the bookstore, along with some chocolate gelt. Play with your roommate, your friends, or host a mini (or not so mini) Hanukkah party in your dorm.

4. Listen to Some Hanukkah Music

What Jewish holiday is complete without some fun music to go with it? Whether you need a soundtrack to your Hanukkah party or just want something festive to listen to while studying for finals, Hanukkah songs are the perfect choice. There’s the classic “Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel,” but there are so many others, like Oh, Chanukah! Oh, Chanukah!, I Am a Latke, In the Window, and tons more!

5. Go to Hillel’s Hanukkah Party

As a Freshman, I’ve never been before, but I know Hillel is planning an awesome Hanukkah party, which is sure to be a super fun way to celebrate the holiday!

Hanukkah is always a fun time of year, filled with many awesome traditions. We’ll be home to celebrate with family for the end of the holiday, but these suggestions can help you celebrate the first few nights while still on campus. Happy Hanukkah, Kenyon!
