Taylor’s New Reputation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

The wait is finally over. That’s right, Taylor Swift has finally dropped her new album, Reputation and it is T-Swift’s sixth studio album. The killer album was released on Friday November 10 but was only available through purchase on iTunes or through a hard copy. She’s withholding her album from streaming services for the first week. So if you’re desperate to listen to the album, you’ll have to be willing to swipe your debit card.

Taylor deleted all her social medias and turned her website black a few months ago, after a long hiatus away from music, her fans freaked out and were on the edge of their seats for what Taylor could possibly be working on. Although once she released Look What You Made Me Doeveryone understood the direction Taylor was planning on going with this new album. She was killing the “old Taylor” and letting badass T-Swift have her chance in the spotlight. She was taking back her crown and she wanted everyone to know it.

What so many people love about Taylor’s music is the fact that it is relatable. She experiences heartbreak just like everyone else, except she takes her anger and pain out by writing songs, and not crying into a tub of ice cream. She says what all girls wish they could say and she gives them the push to feel better with her upbeat dance songs. This album was no different, although Taylor does sing about being in love more than heartbreak. She’s currently in a committed relationship, which you can really tell by her songs. So if you’re currently madly in love, looking for revenge, or you just want some catchy songs to listen to Reputation is the album for you!

Check out some of our favorite songs from the album below!

I Did Something Bad:  “Did Taylor Swift just cuss?” was the first thing I said when I first listened to this song. What happened to Taylor just shaking it off? Oh right, she’s dead. According to this song Taylor doesn’t trust a lot of boys. You and me both,Taylor. This song has a fun beat and makes you feel like you’re walking away from an exploding car, and there’s nothing cooler then that feeling.

“They’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one” the best line from the album. You tell ‘em Tay!

Look What You Made Me Do: The song that started a new Taylor era. It’s a great song to listen to if you’re in need of a good hype anthem before going out with friends.  Ladies, if you’re in need of a new song to fake-walk down a runway to, this is the song for you!

Practicing your runway walk while watching the Victoria Secret Fashion Show just got a whole lot better.

Dress: Well dang Taylor, that’s uh proactive… This is a side of Taylor that’s more sexual then I ever expected we’d hear. The song sounds like it was made for Fifty Shades of Grey. Taylor’s definitely moved on from her “Love Story”.

This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: Kanye, this one’s for you. There’s no doubt in my mind Taylor wrote this song with a huge evil grin on her face. If it wasn’t clear by now, Taylor and Kayne are never going to be friends again, like ever. Basically we can’t have nice things because of Kanye. Thanks a lot Kayne.

New Year’s Day: Ever kiss someone on New Year’s Eve but also want to spend New Year’s Day with them, and every day after that? Well, so has Taylor. This song is beautiful and will make you want to fall in love.

Bridget, a fan of Taylor for years now and even got to meet Taylor a couple years ago, stopped by to say a few words about the album to Her Campus Kent State! Bridget said, “I think Taylor created her own league with this album. She touched a bit into synth-pop with 1989 and obviously changed her sound from her country roots, but Reputation is in its own category. The variety of sounds while still maintaining a cohesive flow is something I don’t see in a lot of albums. On one end, “End Game” could be played at the next party you’re at because of the rap samplings of Ed Sheeran and Future, but if you want a wistful 80’s movie soundtrack- “Getaway Car” fits that perfectly. She ends it with “New Year’s Day”, a piano piece that doesn’t feel out of place among the bass drops. She’s created a cocktail of her own that balances the energy of each song into the perfect record and I’m not sure what I was expecting when she announced it a few months ago but I know this exceeds whatever I thought was coming.” So clearly fans of Taylor’s aren’t the least bit disappointed in what Taylor created.
