My mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

So, here we are again. February. Whenever I hear “February” the first thought that goes through my head is a long and dreadful “ughhhh”. This is the shortest month of the year, but it feels like the longest! Between the icky cold and the colors of red and pink thrown at you wherever you go, this month can be dreadful.

Truthfully, I’m a sucker for love. Romantic movies, flowers, cuddling–I’m all for it! But there is just something about Valentine’s Day that really grinds my gears. Girls, your boyfriend doesn’t need to take you to some five-star restaraunt to prove his love to you! And guys, don’t wait until this one day every year to tell her how you feel. To me, every month should be the month of love! It is so easy for people to save their nice gestures and feelings for Valentine’s Day, but why not do this every day?

I had someone ask me the other day if I hated this holiday because I’m single. My answer was simply “no” (and maybe an eye roll). In fact, this is the first Valentine’s Day in years that I don’t have a boyfriend. It’s a preconceived idea that every girl loves Valentine’s Day and if she doesn’t, then it must be because she’s single. Well, that my friends would be wrong. To some people, Valentine’s Day is just over-rated. Nothing personal.

On the other hand, having a holiday devoted to significant others is actually pretty cool. We already have holidays for moms, dads, grandparents and even siblings; so I guess Valentine’s Day is just better way of saying “Significant Others Day”. February 14th is a day to show just a little extra appreciation to that special someone. Which in that case, I need to go home to my dogs, we have some celebrating to do.
