It’s not too Late to Find the Internship of your Dreams

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

If you’re like me, you’re in a major that requires you to have at least one internship before graduation. You also probably waited until the last second of spring semester during your junior year to begin searching for one. No need to freak out! Let’s pause for a sigh of relief…

It’s actually not too late to land an internship for the summer. Usually, companies and businesses will post their internship applications around December and January, with the hopes of filling all positions by April or May. Students should begin their internship searches as early as November (not March like I did), but some places continue to post internship opportunities throughout spring, and even summer months. You just have to know how to find them.

A great resource for Kent State students is the Career Services Center located in the Schwartz Center. If you ever need to find information regarding internships and applying for them, Career Services is the place to go. Thy are constantly updating the tabs on their website, which contain links and posts about internships.

What I have been finding most helpful is LinkedIn. If you’re in college and don’t have a LinkedIn account, then you need to create one like yesterday. LinkedIn is a professional social media outlet that allows you to connect with employers, coworkers and key figures in your field. They have a search tab where you can find internships that match what you want. I have had the most success with finding internships I actually want in places I want to travel to using LinkedIn.

Last, there are plenty of websites that host a bunch of internships. For example, Indeed.com posts updated internships and allows you to search by type of internship and location. Students have a lot of success using Indeed because it’s simple to use. Other internship search sites include internships.com and idealist.org

All the resources listed here are available 24/7 and updated weekly, if not daily, which is why they’re perfect for students who are struggling to find a last minute summer internship. While finals and projects generally take priority for the next two weeks, finding an internship should, too. Take a break from your hard work and check out some of these resources, because even if an internship isn’t required for your major, it certainly is important and the experience looks extremely good on a resume.

Happy searching and good luck!

I know I’ll need it…
