5 Tips To Deal With Aunt Flow’s Visit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Every woman in the world knows the pain of seeing your monthly “friend.” Here are a few tips and tricks to making your period suck way less!

1) Avoid Coffee and Chocolate.

I know this one hurts. Coffee and chocolate both contain caffeine which constricts blood vessels, ultimately making cramps worse. If you don’t want to cut these out completely, moderation is key. Also, reaching for teas and smoothies can give you the energy boost and satisfaction you are looking for.

2) Take a bath.

That’s right, ladies! Take time to pamper yourself to reduce period pain. The heat from the water eases cramps and leads to faster blood flow which reduces pain. Use bath bombs, salts, bubble bath, etc. for the ultimate experience! If you don’t have time for a bubble bath heating pads also work well.

3) Drink Up!

When on your period, the last thing you may want is a tall glass of water. However, hydration is key to getting rid of bloating. Drinking hot beverages can help ease cramps in particular. (But NOT coffee!)

4) WORK OUT!

This tip is by far the hardest to will yourself to do. Thankfully, we aren’t talking about doing p90x, CrossFit, or any other KILLER exercise regimen. Activities like walking and yoga lead to increased blood flow, reduced cramping, and released endorphins. Endorphins are the “feel-good” hormones that can turn your miserable, cramp-y day into a positive, painless one. (P.S. Orgasms have the same impact!!!)

5) Eat your way to feeling better!

You may want to grab a bag of chips, fries, pizza, or whatever else your heart desires! However, the best option to feeling better involves eating leafy greens, fresh fruits, nuts, cheese, etc. Foods high in fiber and low in processed sugar ease cramping, bloating and overall improve your mood.
