8 Famous Romances History Can’t Forget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

It’s another year and Valentine’s Day is upon us. Your love life may be flourishing or fizzling, but this list of lovers from over the years will either give you hope or make you feel really good about your current situation. Here comes the drama, the shock and awe, and the romance too.

  1. Adam and Eve

In the beginning, we know how the story of this epic couple goes. Ever heard a couple say that it feels like they were made for each other, well this couple can really attest to the notion. So the Biblical story goes, Eve is made to be a companion for Adam, there is forbidden fruit (literally), one son kills the other (Cain and Abel), and no one rides off into the sunset on a white horse. Sorry. (KJV)

2. Pocahontas and John Smith

Okay, so there is this Disney movie right…? Well, if you did not know, here’s a surprise, Pocahontas and John Smith really did exist. John Smith set off for Chesapeake Bay in 1607. Afterwhich, Pocahontas saved him from eminent death and the Indians were able to coexist peacefully with the Jamestown colonists for a while. Pocahontas’s father, Powhatan, is even said to have called John Smith “son”. Although some believe Pocahontas and Smith had a romantic relationship, not to burst your bubble, but it is believed that they were the dreaded “just friends”. Gasp! What’s more, Pocahontas and John’s relationship dwindled after she believed him to be dead following his departure after an explosion of gunpowder between his legs. Needless to say, but ouch! Ultimately, Pocahontas married Englishman John Rolfe. Don’t believe me? Well, NOVA of PBS.org says so, but I suggest that you watch Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World.

3. Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII

This historical romance is one of intrigue and scandal. You may be familiar with the 2008 film The Other Boleyn Girl that is based on this tudor time twosome and if you are not I that suggest you watch it! PBS tells that Anne Boleyn, full of wit, masterfully won over the king’s heart, succeeding his affair with her sister Mary Boleyn and compelling him to leave his first wife Catherine. Yes, drama! King Henry VIII and Anne were married January 25, 1533, but Anne could not produce a male heir or tolerate King Henry VIII’s many affairs. In the end, Anne was accused of incest and adultery by her love and beheaded. However, her child went on to become Queen of England, you have heard of Queen Elizabeth I, right?

4.Bonnie and Clyde

These unlawful lovers go down in history as the most infamous and notorious. The story of this Depression Era duo has been told and replicated over and over throughout the years, but you may not know that while Bonnie and Clyde were very much in love, Bonnie was officially married to another man. Yes, it’s true. The History Channel website notes that Bonnie was married to Roy Thornton, who she knew from high school, but the marriage fizzled and Roy went to prison. History.com notes that even on the day of her and Clyde’s death, Bonnie was wearing her wedding ring from Roy and sporting a tattoo on her inner right thigh that read “Bonnie” and “Roy” with two mingled hearts. Nevertheless, Bonnie and Clyde died side by side in 1934 when Texas and Louisiana police released a rain of 167 bullets on the couple who were in a stolen car at the time and thought to be responsible for 13 murders and multiple robberies. These lovers met their demise just as Bonnie, who was also a writer, said in her poem “The Trail’s End”. Bonnie declared:

Someday they’ll go down together;

And they’ll bury them side by side,

To a few it’ll be grief-

To the law a relief-

But it’s death for Bonnie and Clyde.

5. Lucy and Desi

Everybody loves Lucy and Desi Arnaz loved Lucy both on and off screen. The Bibliography Channel website relays that before Lucy made it to the extreme stardom she achieved with “I Love Lucy”, she met Desi Arnaz, a Cuban band leader, on the set of the 1940’s movie “Dance, Girl, Dance”. They later appeared together in the movie “Too Many Girls” and it is said that Desi had a problem that fit this title. Nevertheless, together they launched their own highly successful production company entitled Desilu Productions, which is responsible for television hits like “I Love Lucy”, “Star Trek”, and “Mission Impossible”. Although, their marriage did not last as they divorced in 1960, we all will forever remember their love in the long-living exclamation “Lucy, I’m home!”

6. Barbie and Ken

Barbie, however fictional, really does have it all and that is why we love her from youth. Barbie has the dream house, the dream car, and she has been able to keep her man for 52 years. Today.com notes, “The two were introduced in 1961 on the beach when Barbie was a blond and Ken sported brown locks. When the two officially became boyfriend and girlfriend in 1962, he was the blond and she had adopted some brunette glamour.” However, they have had their ups and downs like any long-term couple and broke up in 2004, which is when Barbie started to date Australian surfer, Blaine. Since, Barbie and Ken have rekindled their love because we all know they really do belong together.

7. Barack and Michelle Obama

Before this presidential pair married and became the power couple they are today, even before Barack Obama became Mr. President, he was a mere intern at the Sidley Austin law firm’s Chicago branch of law, to which Michelle was his advisor, as per The Bibliography Channel website. After a month, Barack asked his superior Michelle out on a date that she declined because she thought that it would be inappropriate for the two to date. However, she eventually gave in and after two years together, Barack popped the question at dinner with a ring that was brought in on the dessert tray. They were married on October 3, 1992 and continued in their growing careers and successes together, until today as they persist in their love and success as the first ever Black President and First Lady of the United States of America for a second term. Moreover, they exemplify a relationship in which you can have it all, the romance, the joy, and success through it all. In short, you can have your cake and eat it too!

8. Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a charming Prince was single for many years and all of the fair maidens desired his heart, but none could truly capture it until he met a lovely lady whom he wed and the kingdom rejoiced. According to The Bibliography Channel website, when Kate Middleton attended the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, in 2001, she resided in the same dormitory as Prince William and they also had a few of the same classes as well. Naturally, they became friends; however a romance between the two began in 2003. Succeeding a break up in 2007 the love birds rekindled their love and announced their engagement on November 16, 2010. On April 29, 2011 Prince William married and much on [of] the world looked on as Kate Middleton become a real life princess, now deemed Catherine, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge and they now live happily ever after.
