Trends That Girls Love and Guys Hate!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

From Joan Rivers on “Fashion Police” to young women tearing open their new Cosmopolitan to check out the latest in pop culture trends, the media is always telling us what to wear that’s in style. We eat it all up, loving every new print, hem line and shoe style that we see the gorgeous models sporting on the page. Rarely do we ever think to ourselves, “What are guys thinking of this outfit?” While some guys appreciate fashion and enjoy how women look in some of these styles, the majority of college-aged men out there would just rather see women wearing yoga pants!

So how do guys really feel about our fashion choices?  After posting this question on my Facebook and Twitter pages and with the help of the gentlemen who responded, I have come up with the seven trends that JMU guys would like for us to just take off (no pun intended).

7. Too Much Makeup
Apparently Kim Kardashian’s hubby, Kris Humphries, is the exception to this rule. However, it seems guys under seven feet tall are not into girls wearing heavy makeup.  Believe it or not, they want us to be more “natural looking.”  They want to actually see our faces and features not covered up by eye shadow and concealer. Most guys have said, “If a girl is wearing too much makeup, it’s like she has something to hide.”

Opting to stick with a little bronzer and some light mascara will definitely help give you a more natural and approachable look. Save the glam for the weekend! A side note to this is the inclusion of big sunglasses. You know, the ones that are so big you can barely see the person’s face?  Men find this style of sunglasses extremely ugly and they feel like we’re wearing a mask.

6. Words on Our Booties
Victoria’s Secret may have been wrong with their PINK® collection. According to guys at JMU, girls wearing words like “Pink” and “Juicy” spelled across the back of their pants is not something they find attractive. In fact, they believe it to be incredibly “trashy” and even confusing.  One JMU junior asked, “Why does it say ‘Pink’ across her butt if her pants aren’t even pink in the first place?” I just replied, “Who knows, maybe that’s just Victoria’s secret?” (Ok fine, pun intended on that one).

5. Sweats & Messy Hair, Don’t Care
Guys don’t mind our T-shirts. They definitely don’t mind our yoga pants (number 1 thing guys love on a girl for sure). But when we blatantly show that we don’t care what we look like, it becomes a turn off.  Of course guys believe we shouldn’t have to dress up everyday, but when they see us in oversized sweatpants, a big T-shirt and our hair in a huge mess on the top of our heads regularly on campus, it gives off the impression that we don’t really care how we’re presenting ourselves.  And if we don’t care, why should they?  Of course we are all entitled to have lazy days, but there’s a difference between dressing down for an 8am and looking like a slob. As classy ladies of JMU, we need to know that difference!

4. Feather Extensions
I wanted a feather extension so bad until my eight-year-old campers started coming to day camp with them.  Guys honestly do not understand this trend and most would like to see it gone, along with the random strip of dyed hair and fake hair extensions (guys are freaked out by the fake clip-on hair thing). The guys who originally liked the feathers have slowly changed their minds as they’ve watched this trend become far too overdone. When it comes to our hair, guys truly prefer our natural look.

3. Rompers
The actual definition of a romper is “a loosely fitted, one-piece garment having short bloomers that is worn especially by small children for play.”  So all I’m saying is that whomever thought this style should be worn by anyone else was obviously trying to relive his or her own childhood.  Guys hate rompers.  Most of them don’t quite even understand what they are and the rest of them note that they make our “bottom” look like a “pancake.” Besides, girls know that not all rompers are made equally. Finding one that fits perfectly can be a huge challenge and the way some of them are designed make us look like old grandpas. (I guess guys don’t find old grandpas very attractive?)

2. Uggs
I know what you’re thinking; Uggs are possibly the most comfortable shoes on the planet!  They don’t match anything, but somehow manage to match everything. They’re the perfect shoes for winter and make your feet feel as if you’re walking on a cloud.  However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that Uggs are “Ugg-ly.” According to the gentlemen of James Madison, Uggs are hideous and over worn.  Fortunately, our fine men understand that Uggs are a staple item in our closets and we girls won’t be giving them up completely anytime soon.

1. Rainboots
Sure we love to splish-splash around in them whenever there’s a storm over the Burg, but many of us recognize how absolutely ridiculous we look in them.  It’s official: guys most certainly realize it as well! The noise they make, the outrageous patterns, and the outfits we wear with them are just three of the many reasons I have been given as to why this is the most hated women’s fashion trend by men.

Next time you’re stressing about what to wear when hanging out with that cute guy who sits next to you in class, just remember these pointers and realize that while he’s not judging whether or not you’re wearing the new Fall line, he is noticing your style and how you present yourself.
