Katie Christovich: Life as a Dukette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Name: Katie Christovich

Year: Sophomore

Major: IDLS, Elementary Education

Campus Involvement: Member of the JMU Dukettes

Why did you want to join the Dukettes?
All four years of high school I was on a dance team so it has always been a part of my life and I couldn’t imagine anything without it. I also wanted a way to be a part of the JMU community while also staying physically active every day.

What’s your favorite part about being a Dukette?
We are all so close. I have my own JMU family because of the team and I don’t know of a team that is closer than we are. I also love the experiences I get to be a part of. The Marching Royal Dukes are absolutely fantastic and being able to share the field with them is such a unique experience that will always give me such a rush.

What’s the hardest part about being a Dukette?
It’s extremely time-consuming and stressful at times. It’s 2-3 hours every day plus we participate in a lot of community events throughout the year. We do a lot with the football and basketball teams, and we also have to focus on our Nationals routine in addition to those performances. Sometimes it’s stressful with classes and practices, but at the same time it’s all worth it in the end.

What three words would you use to describe your team?
Dedicated, hard working, and spirited. We work so hard every single day at what we do, and you’ll never see us without smiles on our faces!

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to try out for the team?
I would say to really make sure you love it because it’s so time consuming that if you aren’t happy doing it, you aren’t going to get as much out of it. It’s extremely rewarding if you work hard for it though.
