Don’t be a Scrooge, play some Tunes!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

It’s no secret that the holiday season is lurking right around the corner! If the Christmas tree on the Quad or the lights covering UREC weren’t a big enough sign, almost every radio station you turn on is playing some classic holiday music. So my little collegiettesTM, while you’re packing your bags and getting your iPod ready for that trip home, get yourself in the holiday spirit with these 10 “make you sing out loud until the person in the car next to you is looking at you really funny” Christmas songs!

“All I Want for Christmas is You”: Mariah Carey
Admit it, you were all thinking it! This song will perhaps forever go down in history as that feel good sing along for women. You yell it, you make the Mariah Carey hand motions. You love it.

“Last Christmas”: Taylor Swift
While I’m more a fan of the 80’s Wham version of this song, with all its sexual tension and big hair, Taylor Swift’s version puts a nice new pop/country spin on the classic Christmas song.  And as always, the lyrics are just as catchy and the “get ready to see last year’s ex” message still stands.

“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”: Jessica Simpson
If I saw my mommy kissing Santa Claus, I’d go smack him, not write a song about it! (Hehe). But Jessica Simpson’s version is sure to put a smile on your face.

“Mele Kalikimaka”: Bing Crosby
If you’ve ever seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, you’ve heard this AWESOME holiday song. And if you haven’t seen it, I suggest you get up and go rent it. Immediately.

“Christmas Eve Sarajevo”: Trans Siberian Orchestra
There may not be any lyrics, but Trans Siberian Orchestra says it all with this intense holiday song.

“Santa Baby”: Eartha Kit
Many have tried to remake it, but Eartha Kit has still got it going on in her version of the sexual “Santa Baby.” Now if only Santa would actually bring me Tiffany’s…

“My Only Wish (This Year)”: Britney Spears
Britt wanted someone to love and someone to hold and she got her wish! (You go girl!) She never seems to let me down with her songs and this tune is sure to make your season bright.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside”: Dean Martin & Doris Day
Doris Day was trying to play hard to get in this song. But instead this holiday season, snuggle up with the one you love, sip some hot cocoa and listen to this song instead of braving that cold weather.

“It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas”: Bing Crosby
This song will forever remind me of precious Kevin Macalister in “Home Alone.” Whenever the first snow falls, it’s sure to be the song that comes to mind. So belt it out in your best Bing Crosby voice and enjoy the blizzards that are soon to come.

“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”: Michael Buble
Okay, so everyone knows this is the ‘Christmas song,’ and let’s face it; Michael Buble is a major hottie.  It’s probably the perfect Christmas song to snuggle to by a fire and just relax because finals are OVER!

These are just 10 of the hundreds of amazing holiday songs out there! So when you’re getting done with those finals and ready to be completely in the holiday spirit, put these classics on, pour yourself some hot cocoa or egg nog, (peppermint schnapps? Sure, why not!?) and have yourself a very happy and healthy holiday season!
