College Graduate…Now What?By April 25, 2013 - 8:00am Class of 2013, you did it. You made it through four years of college, but now what? Now is the time where everyone begins to take their own paths in life. Some of your friends may be moving back home, some may start their new job the day after graduation, but not everyone goes down the same road. You’ll soon realize that not everyone finds a job before or directly after graduation; in fact more often than not it takes several months and in some cases over a year. That’s normal. When it’s meant to be it will happen. While you’re waiting to hear back, try and relax and enjoy what time you have left before a job consumes your time. READ MORE |

Through the Eyes of a SeniorBy April 24, 2013 - 8:00am It’s that time of year again. The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer and our motivation to go to class is getting weaker. Yes, it is definitely spring semester at JMU. Except this time is different because for the class of 2013, it’s our last. As I look at my graduation gown hanging in my closet I can’t help but laugh thinking about how I got to this point. I look at pictures from my freshman year and think how I am a completely different person now than I used to be. A wise man named Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Never has that quote had more meaning than it does spring semester senior year. HerStory: Kelsey RuaneBy April 24, 2013 - 8:00am *Contributing writer: Kelsey Ruane, James Madison University Feminism to me is empowerment to recognize and change the harmful aspects of our society. Like many others, I never thought I would be a feminist because of the negative stereotypes surrounding it and because I thought that there was no work left to be done. As a sociology major, I have learned that that is far from the truth and there is still so much more that has to be done to improve the world for the people we care about. I want a world where women aren’t held to impossible beauty standards, or constantly in fear of sexual assault. I want a world where men can express themselves emotionally and don’t feel the need to live up to harmful standards of masculinity.... |

Matt Ezzell, Professor of Sociology at JMUBy April 23, 2013 - 8:00am As a loyal Her Campus JMU reader, you may be saying to yourself, “I came to HC to read about make up tips for graduation! What is all of this feminism crap?!” Here at Her Campus JMU, we have an answer for that. This week, we’re trying to spread awareness about just how freakin’ awesome women are and how we can spread the word to the rest of campus, including some of our not-so-enlightened classmates. We caught up with this week’s campus celeb, Matt Ezzell, JMU sociology professor, and asked him to explain some feminism basics, talk a little bit about his uh-mazing career, and spill the details on how we can make a positive change at JMU. HC: Could you please provide a brief career bio? READ MORE... |

Feminism Spotlight: Jennifer BaumgardnerBy April 23, 2013 - 8:00am If there is anything that has ever been a staple of how we operate here at Her Campus, it is that we are all about strong women. When it comes to role models, this woman takes first place in the fabulous department. Having worked with some A-List names such as Oprah Winfrey (gasp!) and Margaret Cho, and even having a career in the oh-so glamorous fashion magazine industry (double gasp!), activist and author Jennifer Baumgardner absolutely knows how to inspire a generation to embrace gender equality and fight for what they believe in. Her Campus JMU got the chance to sit down with Baumgardner and pick her brain on feminism, the magazine industry, loving yourself and more. Read on collegiettes, you might just be inspired to go out there and make some... |
