A Guide to your New College Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

As a New Yorker, adjusting to the city life here in Philadelphia was not much of a challenge. The bustling people on the crowded pavement, endless traffic and countless department stores was a comforting factor. Despite being only an hour and a half away, adjusting to living in a new state for the first time on my own had been a discerning thought lingering in the back of my mind since I had sent in my deposit on decision day. One thing many students, including myself, learn during their first week is that homesickness is real. Whether you are a car ride or a plane ticket away, there is nothing like being in the comfort of your own bed and leaning on your family, friends and even pets for support.

During your time here at Jefferson University, it is important to learn how to properly manage your time. Neglecting your emails and forgetting to complete your homework assignment won’t make you a viable candidate for a job in the future or leave a good impression on your professors. What kind of student you are and what kind of person you are will be synonymous with one another. One of the most useful resources to manage your time and assignments is to keep a planner. Setting reminders on your phone calendar works just as efficiently, but for some, writing it out is easier to remember. Pulling an all-nighter can happen as early as your third week into school, be sure to know your schedule like the back of your hand and don’t be surprised when an assignment you’d been pushing back suddenly creeps up on you.

With such a large campus to delve into and numerous responsibilities during Welcome Week, finding time for yourself can be a chore. With too many awkward ice-breakers to handle, new friendships and a rigorous course load, being able to balance your academic career while having a healthy amount of social interaction can seem almost impossible. Take a moment to drink in your surroundings and take a Saturday off to travel in the city! Philadelphia is filled with great food, sights, and festivals, why spend your entire college experience cooped up in your dorm room? The Rocky Statue, Philadelphia Museum of Art and Spruce Street Harbor Park are all popular and fun places to visit with friends on a weekend or during your free time. Be your own advocate, because at the end of the day, the only helping hand that will always be there for you is the one at the end of your arm. Stay focused, stay confident and stay positive, even though it is easier said than done.
