Top 6 Things You Need to Do in Cleveland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

Whether you have been around campus for a while or you’re new to these parts, the city of Cleveland is definitely worth checking out. We know it’s easy to get caught up in the vicious Saturday night cycle of Netflix/Tween/and then more Netflix after that. So, if you have just forgotten that Cleveland is just a quick Rapid ride away, or you’ve never even heard of the Rapid, this list is the one for you. Do yourself a favor and skip the Hockey house this Saturday to try out one of these. We guarantee you’ll thank us.

1. The Shaker Square Diner

After a long night out with friends or just after a really long Religion 101 reading, The Diner at Shaker Square is always a good idea. Located right next to the Rapid station in Shaker Square, The Diner is the perfect place to grab a bite whether it’s 2 pm or 2 am. Plus they have the best home fries with cheese and bacon. Who can say no to bacon?

2. The West Side Market

Easily one of the coolest and most diverse places in Cleveland, the West Side Market is Cleveland’s oldest public market. Over a hundred vendors all gather together and offer any and every kind of food imaginable. Located on West 25th Street, the market is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays year round. Pro tip? Get the Fudge.

3. Cleveland Botanical Garden

Even though it’s only the second week of school, we here at Her Campus already need a study break. What better way to escape the reflection paper blues than to stop and literally smell the roses? The Botanical Gardens is a great place to kick back and just take it all in. Bonus Points if you quiz your Biology 3 friends on the names of all the plant species.

4. See a movie at Cedar Lee

If you’ve already exhausted all of the available movie options on Netflix, the Cedar Lee Theater is the best place to get your movie fix. This theater is always showing award-winning independent and foreign films, as well as some old favorites.

5. Grab a bite at Melt

And we don’t mean melt like Frosty the Snowman (although Cleveland’s infamous winter IS coming). Melt is a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich shop at the corner of Cedar and South Taylor Road. And is a welcome change to our normal dining hall fare. WARNING: You will be full for weeks afterward.

6. Karaoke at Tina’s

You might not be the Chapel Choir’s star performer, but your roommate doesn’t complain (that much) when you belt out all the words to ‘If I Were a Boy.’ And there is no better place to embrace your inner Beyoncé than Tina’s Nite Club. Just hop on the Green Line and you’ll be hitting those high notes in no time. The best part? Tina’s is open every night of the week.
