My Thoughts on Freshman Year Coming to a Close

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

Just a little over a year ago, I was visiting the school I now attend. And now, I move out of my freshman dorm in about two-three weeks. This year went by so quickly and it’s hard to believe that it’s almost over. I have learned so much throughout this year, both inside and outside the classroom. I almost went to a community college to save money, but I really felt that I needed to get away from home, especially freshman year.

Before I left home, my biggest concern was independence. I am happy to say that I have become much more independent, which I feel just happens naturally as you get to school and suddenly realize that mom is no longer around to take care of you, at least not as much as she did when you were in high school. My newfound independence only makes me more excited for the next three years because I know I can take care of myself, for the most part. Looking back, it is crazy to think about how much has changed in the span of about 8 months. I’ve made plenty of friends, and lost a few, but I learned how to be okay with that.

I tend to be the type of person to reminisce, so I think overall I am happy to keep moving forward. I am looking forward to what next year offers, but it’s almost saddening how quickly this year went by. First semester moved quickly, but second semester went by in the blink of an eye. My biggest concern is that over the span of the few months that is summer, I will lose touch with some of my friends as most of us live in different cities, but I feel that we’ll remain in contact with all of the social media we have today.

So, overall, I wish this year didn’t go by so quickly, but I’m really looking forward to strengthening the friendships I’ve made this year and hopefully making many more.
