  1. What made you decide on John Carroll?

The two things that encouraged my decision to attend JCU were the campus ministry and the individualized attention the teachers give to their students. From my very first visit I fell in love with the beautiful campus and the idea of the community of people that go here. The school made it very clear that they support Jesuit values and have a very influential campus ministry. I have been very fortunate to get involved in the ministry from the retreats I have gone on, my Carroll Faith Community, and weekly mass.

When I was touring John Carroll I was debating going into Education or Computer Science. After sitting in an information session with Dr. Shick and Dr. Palmer about the Math and CS department I knew what decision to make. My dad and I were blown away by how down to earth these two professors were and their amazing sense of humor. Later my dad could not stop talking about how much they seemed to care about their student. Now as a third semester student I can attest that these two were not exaggerating. I have greatly benefited from the office hours and time spent with many of my teachers.

  1. Have you taken advantage of John Carroll’s service opportunities?

Through the JCU Women’s Club Volleyball team I got to participate in tutoring at the Church of the Covenant. I helped a young boy in 10th grade with his math and history homework. I enjoyed the experience so much I signed up for it the following semester as a weekly service. When I went back to the church I was so excited to see the boy I had worked with before and I enjoyed getting to know lots of other students and helping them with their school work. I definitely hope to do more service through John Carroll because they have so many opportunities.

  1. How many retreats have you gone on so far, and how were they?

I attended the First Year Retreat where I met some great people and made my first connections with the resident ministers. It was a short retreat but I had a lot of fun and it was nice to get to know people that share my faith. Last spring, I was truly blessed to have gone on the Manresa 32 Retreat. It was one of the most influential weekends of my life and really reconnected me with my faith. My perspective on life was changed so much during that experience and it was really amazing to meet so many upperclassman that I can look up to and go to for advice about faith or John Carroll. This year I got to go on a retreat with all of the other Carroll Faith Community leaders. I am leading a CFC with my great friend Rachel Schubert. The retreat was a great experience for us to bond in our faith and connect with the other leaders.

Any retreat through John Carroll is guaranteed to be a great time. You will meet great people, have plenty of snacks, and hopefully grow deeper in your faith.

  1. What is your favorite class that you’ve taken at John Carroll so far?

I think my favorite class was Intro to Programing. Many people take the class and realize right away if they like Computer Science or not. I really enjoyed the class and the labs we had each week. I like the challenge of thinking your way through a problem and ending with a final product that you are proud to show your teacher and your friends. We got to do some really cool programs in that class that made me think about everything that goes into video games and computer games I used to play as a kid. Now I am a Lab Assistant for that class and it is one of the highlights of my week. Working with the current students and seeing them make progress each week is a really cool thing to be a part of.

  1. Why did you choose to major in computer science, and what do you hope to accomplish after you graduate?

Originally I was going to double major in Education and Mathematics. However my senior year I took a programming class that I found very interesting and my worries about teaching increased. So I decided to come to John Carroll planning to double major in math and cs. After this semester I have realized that the workload does not allow me to live a balanced life. So after a lot of thought I have decided to Major in CS with a Minor in Math. I definitely feel a ton of relief in this decision and am optimistic about next semester.

I hope to get a job in the Computer Science field when i get out of school. But I do hope to go back to school someday and get a Masters in Education so I can teach after some experience in the “real world.” I definitely owe one of my favorite teachers from high school, Mrs. Krauland, for asking me to take her programming course my senior year. I learned so much from her and she directed me into a field that has so much job growth and I find really enjoyable!

  1. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

If I could go anywhere I think I would go to Ireland. My family is Irish so I think it would be cool to see where we were originally from. I love the idea of the beautiful open land and the lively cities. I know a group goes to Ireland for two week in May every year so I am hoping to go one year to make my dream trip a reality.

  1. Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?

I love walking around campus especially at night. Our campus is so beautiful so taking the time to look around and appreciate it gives me a sense of joy. I love the fountain in front of the Mary statue near Boler. That is a great place to stop and take a breathe of fresh air while saying a prayer. I love seeing groups and individuals gather there to pray.

  1. On a scale of one to ten, how ready are you for thanksgiving break?

Probably an eleven! I am so ready to be home with my family enjoying time with them and hopefully relaxing. Not to mention I am pumped for Thanksgiving dinner with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles. I think everyone has hit the point in the semester that we need this break and hopefully can come back refreshed to finish out the semester.
