A Trip to Hell’s Cafe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jax State chapter.

In honor of it FINALLY being the spookiest month of the year, let’s take a trip to the 19 th century, and 4,425 miles away to Paris, France. You are about to enter Café de L’Enfer, also known as The Café of Hell. As you enter, a doorman dressed as a demon yells “enter and be damned!” You pass through the door, which is hardly a door at all. It is an arch shaped as the mouth of the devil, taunting you as you enter. The windows are guarded by heaven iron gates, and the exterior of the building has ghouls lingering all around. On the inside, people loitered and drank, while a terrifying design looked down upon them. There were cauldrons of fire placed throughout the café, and the ceiling was quite remarkable. Creatures, demons, and ghosts were plastered on the ceiling, looking down upon those who entered. The musicians and waitresses dressed as devils, and were known to look terrifying. However, not much information is available today about the hellacious club.

Just down the road, was another hidden Halloween gem. It was called Cabaret de Ńeant, or The Cabaret of Death. They seated guests at a table horribly similar to a coffin, and served them drinks out of glasses shaped like skulls. The door was covered in heavy black cloths, and the room was light by dull lanterns. The walls were covered in skulls and bones. The waiters were dressed as hearse men, and referred to the drinks ordered as poisons and potions. Would you dare take a Halloween adventure to either of these if you had a time machine?
