Curly hair: a blessing or a curse? When a curly-haired girl has a good hair day, it’s like the heavens have opened up. Soft, luscious curls that bounce with every step are a blessing. On a bad hair day, however, you better watch out. I recommend just throwing your hair into a bun because it’s the least likely thing to anger the beast. With all of that in mind, here are four things that you’re doing wrong with your curly hair.

1) Overwashing

Are you a girl who has to lather up every day? Stop! Shampooing too frequently is bad for all hair types, especially curly! Curly hair is drier than straight hair and doesn’t get as oily as quickly. In fact, some curly girls can get away with shampooing their hair only a couple times a week! Do your hair a favor and skip a shampoo. It will look greasy for a little while but once your hair becomes accustomed to your new washing schedule, it’ll be happy and healthy.

2) Conditioner (or Lack Thereof)

Conditioner is not an option. If you do nothing else for the rest of your curly-haired career, CONDITION. It preserves the healthiness of your hair, keeps it soft and manageable, and gives a smoother canvas with which to work. I cannot stress this enough. You can go without shampooing but do not skip conditioner!

3) Drying Hair with a Towel

When you dry your soaking hair with a towel, you rough up your follicles, which creates frizz. It damages your beautiful curls! Avoid rubbing your hair dry. Instead, gently squeeze the water from your hair and wrap it in a cotton t-shirt. The fabric is gentler and won’t rough up your curls.

4) Blowdrying Wet Hair (or Using Heat Tools in General)

On the topic of frizz, using a hairdryer on sopping wet hair is a no-no! It uses too much heat to compensate for the soaked hair, which in turn damages your hair. Always always always use a heat protectant when using heat tools. Ideally, you should give hair products about ten to fifteen minutes to soak in before drying hair. If you can avoid it, go heat-free!

Hopefully, by following these tips, we can make every day a good hair day! Your curls will thank you!
