The arrival of cooler weather means packing up our bathing suits, high-waisted shorts, and crop tops to be replaced by boots, sweaters and beanies. While saying goodbye to sweet summertime never gets any easier, there are plenty of reasons why you should welcome fall with open arms.

1. No More Sweating

As soon as the fall semester approaches, the cool crisp weather becomes more anticipated than ever. Of course, the summer heat is nice, if there’s a pool to cool down in. But sitting in a house without air conditioning could be a form of punishment, and arriving to class with your back drenched in sweat is hardly a good way to make new friends. When the fall weather arrives, we no longer have to sleep next to a blaring fan, but instead, we can fall asleep comfortably with the window open. The atmosphere and most attitudes change when we don’t have to sweat through the heat that seeps into the late August and September months.

2. Better Fashion Trends

Hello maroon, denim jackets, and fringe! It is no doubt that autumn is the best season to dress for. Who doesn’t love comfy oversized sweaters that reach your knees when you sit down? The temptation to suck it in while wearing crop tops doesn’t exist in the fall. We get the luxury of wearing sweaters, leggings, boots, high socks, scarves, and hats. The accessorizing and layering never ends in the fall.

3. Pumpkin Spice Latte Season

Everyone’s seasonal obsession comes out in the Fall- pumpkin spice lattes. But pumpkin flavor doesn’t just stop at coffee. Actually pumpkin takes over just about everything. There are pumpkin flavored cookies, cream cheese, bagels, donuts, and so much more. So if you’re a lover of fall, you’re a lover of pumpkin. The two go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. You know what, I bet there’s even pumpkin bread you could make that sandwich on.

4. Halloween Planning

Now that it’s fall, we can start planning our Halloween costumes, even though we’ve all been thinking about what we’re going to be throughout the year. Hell, we started thinking about our next costume idea November 1st.  But now that summer is gone, it’s socially acceptable to start planning, accessorizing, and DIYing our costumes.

5. Better Shows On Television

With the arrival of fall, come the shows we know and love. American Horror Story: Hotel, featuring Lady Gaga as a new cast member, is making its way back to our T.V screens Oct. 7. Along with Bob’s Burgers and Brooklyn Nine-Nine coming September 27. Expect to see Supernatural, The Originals, The Walking Dead, and Homeland all pop up sometime in October.

6. Halloween Movies

During October, Disney channel features a month-long celebration of Halloween themed movies called, “Monstober.” And even as college students, Disney Channel Movies are a guilty pleasure. Don’t Look Under The Bed, Halloweentown (1, 2, 3 AND 4), The Scream Team, Mom’s Got a Date With a Vampire, Phantom of the Megaplex, and Twitches, just to name a few.

But for those that have outgrown Disney Channel Original Movies, the classic horrors such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, and of course the all time favorite, Hocus Pocus, will be featured on your TV at some point during October.

My name is Mary Romeo, and I'm a junior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania majoring in communications media, and minoring in journalism. I have a passion for reading and writing. Not only do I contribute to HerCampus but I am also the lead writer for the school newspaper, The Penn. I also write and perform my own segments on the IUP-TV show, Witticism, where I give my best (sarcastic) advice to those in need. You may also see as an anchor for the IUP NewsCenter. I hope to one day write and possibly make a 30 second appearance in film or television.
