Sexy vs. Sleazy Costumes for Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

What makes a Halloween costume stand out, memorable, and ultimately, sexy?  This is something we ask ourselves during the weeks that lead up to Halloween every single year.  Now the “lingerie and some form of animal ears” look a la Mean Girls can seem a little tired, but you still want to show off your creativity and the store bought costumes just aren’t cutting it, there are ways to be sexy without being worn out.

There are three main components to a successful Halloween costume: makeup/hair, costume, and shoes.  But where do you draw the line between sexy and sleazy?

Makeup and hair might not be the first thing people look at when they see you on Halloween, but it is important in order to come off sexy.  Subtlety goes a long way.  You want to highlight your features so they pop without giving off a painted face look (unless you’re actually painting your face.)

Try this: Go for “tasteful seductive” try a smoky eye and some bouncy waves, no one can resist that femme fatale look.

Not that: Caked on foundation is never cute, even if you’re going as Honey Boo-boo (by the way, we do not suggest this as that costume is way overdone)

Costume is essential in portraying your creativity and sexiness (duh, it’s Halloween).  Wear something that flatters your body.  Stay away from revealing too much – if you want to show off some skin, that’s fine but just make sure you won’t be remembered as the girl who flashed the whole party because of a wardrobe malfunction.

Try this: Go for a girly look rather than a sleazy one. Tutus are a great option, and are looking to be pretty huge this halloween. Recruit your roommate and look online for inspiration, keep it simple, you don’t want to be explaining your costume all night.

Not that: No lingerie, collegiettes! We’re better than that, come on now.

Now for shoes, either they’re sexy or they’re sleazy.  Heels can be phenomenal.  Best way to check is to either is to walk around in them before you leave the house; if you can’t walk in them, they’re probably sleazy.

Try this: Make your shoes a part of the costume! Don’t go as a superhero with 5 inch heels, instead find some cute sneakers or flats that make the costume come together, added bonus you’ll probably be able to wear them again!

Not that: Everyone hates unbearably painful shoes, so why wear them? Halloween is supposed to be fun so don’t torture yourself! Wear whatever is most comfortable (you’ll thank us later, I promise.)

Be memorable in a good way, not the “OMG did you see her outfit?”  Of course, everyone wants to dress up as something they’re not but the ultimate way to pull of “sexy” is confidence.  So dress up, have fun, and be confident!

Here are some of our favorite costume ideas!

Britney Spears through the years: She’ll never go out of style

Group costumes with your girlfriends: 3 blind mice, your favorite team’s “cheerleaders,” thing 1 and thing 2, 4 card suits, animals

Superheroes: You and your roomie could even go as a superhero and their villan, Batman and Poison Ivy perhaps?

As I look forward to the three nights of Halloween, I hope you are too so remember sexy is in, sleazy is so last year.
