Ska!

By Brittany Tempest
March 26, 2013 - 9:21pm

There’s a music genre in Bloomington you probably don’t know about. It can sometimes be found at the Bluebird and sometimes it can be found at Rhino’s Youth Club. But it isn’t something you’ll hear on the radio or at a party. Ska found its popularity in the likes of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’s hit “The Impression That I Get” and has hung around in popularity ever sense. An example of Ska’s influence is Of Monster’s and Men’s hit “Little Talks.” While the song is not directly listed as a ska song, it has definite ska undertones in the presence of trombones and trumpets throughout the song, especially in the chorus. Ska is characterized by its cross between big band music and pop, with a dash of reggae. READ MORE

By Kelsey Roadruck
March 5, 2013 - 7:37pm

Although it was written and published in the 19th Century, Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina is nonetheless timeless. When I was assigned this very long read for my Russian literature class, I had SparkNotes on deck. However, I was so quickly enveloped in the story, I couldn’t put it down. Here’s an overview of the story that continues to capture audiences more than a century later. READ MORE

Collegiette's Book Club: Gone Girl

By Courtney Kabbes
March 3, 2013 - 4:54pm

If you’re anything like me, the most important thing on your spring break packing list is a good book. Nothing sounds more relaxing then being half naked on the beach with a novel in one hand and a drink in the other. While my greedy eyes will read anything I can get my hands on, no book has "wowed" me in a while. Until now.  I have to admit it took me a rather long time to cure my 50 Shades of Grey hangover (I wasn’t ready to admit that Christian Grey is in fact a fictional character… or accept what happened in the 3rd book… like really?) I can honestly say that Gone Girl was the right book to make me realize there is bigger and better things out there then the Red Room of Pain. READ MORE

What is it about the Harlem Shake that is so appealing? Odds are, you hadn’t heard of the Harlem Shake more than two weeks ago. Then suddenly, BAM! The Brospective: Understanding the Male Mind a Bit Better

By Gabe McHaffie

Why do my boyfriend and all guys love dubstep so much? The long answer is when two people are destined to be together and they finally meet, something amazing happens. A bond and merging is made of their minds and spirits. Dubstep is the most accurate representation of that love an artist can produce. What your boyfriend is actually doing is reminiscing of the love you two share. The short answer is it’s awesome. READ MORE

Opera's are Awesome: Xerxes

By Brittany Tempest
February 15, 2013 - 1:17am

When I walked through the doors of the Musical Arts Center and into the opera Xerxes on February 9, I knew I was going to like it. I played through all of G. F. Handel’s Flute Sonata in high school for the Indiana State Scholastic Music Association (ISSMA) Solo and Ensemble competition and had fallen in love with them. (I actually wanted to practice, which is incredibly rare. I was a lazy flautist in high school.) His music in general touches more emotions in me than other composers. His music tends to tiptoe through the extremes of emotion; either very playful or very moving. READ MORE

Get a Cultural One-Up Post-Grad

By Brittany Tempest
February 9, 2013 - 5:14pm

(Photo Courtesy of Jacobs School of Music) Picture this: you’re a fresh-faced post-grade sitting confidently  in the office of the head hauncho of your dream job. You’re feeling confident but anxious, fiddling with your clothes and trying to let the confidence win over the anxiety as much as possible while answering the questions of the intimidating figure before you. Everything is going well, until the employer asks if you had seen one of the legendary shows that were held in either the Musical Arts Center or the Auditorium in your time as an IU student. Truthfully, what can you say? READ MORE
