Lauren’s Cornell Diaries: Losing My CU Frat “Virginity”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

Music on, clothes thrown everywhere, nail polish spilling, makeup flying, and hair being pulled in every way imaginable—the start to a typical Saturday night in the life of any collegiette.

My roommate and I discussed possible plans because, for once, we had options. It was the first weekend of the spring semester in our freshman year, and we were always looking for somewhere to go on weekend nights. We could a) go down to the Commons with some of our girlfriends, or b) head to Cornell for the first time.  The temptation of frat guys and a new crowd proved irresistible, and we were Cornell bound.

Exciting pregame tweets ensued: “the IC girls take Cornell! #leggo” and other now-embarrassing exclamations. Before we knew it, we were perched in the trunk of someone’s boyfriend’s SUV, off to the other hill, and ready for our first Ivy League adventure.

We arrived at the fraternity’s annex house ready for a good time. Descending into the basement, we quickly realized we were in a different world. Within minutes someone’s heel snapped and another’s dress ripped, but drinks were served, introductions were made, and we immediately felt at home in the sea of attractive, male, Division 1 swimmers, divers, and football players. It wasn’t long before one guy came over to my roommate and I, inviting us to play a game.

A few hours and many techno songs later, I had scored my first Cornell boy. No, it’s not what you think; I just got his number. I never would have thought that after a few months and several dinners we would be dating. One adventurous night off of South Hill into the gorgeous architecture of Cornell University and the bustling streets of Collegetown made an unexpected difference on my freshman year, and now my entire college experience. So next time you’re thinking about isolating yourself with some Gossip Girl on Netflix and that jar of Nutella under your bed, you should take a chance, head to the other hill, and get yourself some Ivy-League action. Who knows, maybe it’ll pay off.
