It’s That Time of the Year: Cold Remedies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

Hello there sick reader! I bet you are blaming your cold or illness on the weather – and I agree with you. This time of the year is so beautiful, yet so “dangerous” – and I mean that we are so in tuned to the idea of sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes and the beautiful colors that surround us but, we aren’t prepared for the illnesses that come with the colder weather. If you are sick, or just think that your immune system will give out at some point during your time spent at school/away from home, here are some of my ideas of the best remedies of getting better:

1. Tea:

I know some of you may be avid coffee drinkers, and recently I’ll admit that I have become one too, but during the time of your illness, you should not be drinking coffee! Tea has lower levels of caffeine (if that is why you drink your coffee) and it also holds antioxidants that will help your immune system fight off your illness.

2. Chicken Noodle Soup:

What a cliché, am I right? But still, the broth from the soup will help clear out your sinuses and the steam from the hot temperature of the soup will warm you up if you are feeling cold! You can never go wrong with your grandma’s or your mom’s homemade soup, but if you are away from home, its okay to get Healthy Choice soup or even Campbell’s!

 3. Movies/Binge Watching Netflix (or whatever site you use to watch your shows)

When you are sick, you almost always feel weak and unable to do your work. So why not just stay in bed and have a roommate bring you your laptop for you to watch TV? Personally, whenever I’m sick, I always watch movies from my childhood if I can find them online. Why? To be honest, I don’t really know; maybe it is because I want to be home at a time when I can’t be and the movies remind me of the days when I could stay home from school with my mom.

4. Call Home:

Even if you are just calling to talk about the weather, hearing familiar voices, whether it is your parents, best friends, cousins or grandparents (or even to talk to your dog), is always a “pick-me-up”. Maybe someone along the way would tell you something else that this article won’t.

5. Soft Blankets:

Like I said for “Chicken Noodle Soup”: your body temperature will be cold and your body temperature will be hot. So be prepared for it! Curl up on your bed with one blanket that will keep you warm (when you need to be) and happy.

6. Rest:

Just for a day (or day and a half), take a break from your classes and work (if you don’t have a project or major essay due the next day) and just get a full eight hours of sleep or just lay in bed all day or take naps. I am just a big sleeper, I could possibly sleep for a ten minute car ride or I could take a nap for three hours – so I highly recommend this any day, when you are healthy or sick as a dog.
