I have a really bad case of insomnia and so as I was snooping around Facebook at about two in the morning the other day and I noticed that someone posted a link to the Facebook page, “IC Missed Connections” in the Ithaca College Class of 2015 group. I figured I click and see what this page was all about and as soon as I scrolled through a few posts, I knew I had to write an article about this.
To summarize, it is a Facebook page where students can write anonymous posts to someone who they had a “missed connection” with. For instance, if I saw a boy in line at La Vincita who I thought was cute but didn’t have the nerve to talk to him there, I could submit a Facebook post like this ” To the cute boy in the La Vincita line, I wish I spoke to you…” If you think someone is reaching out to you, “the connector”/owner of the page can also try to set you up with that person through a private message.
Now as I was reading these posts, one after the other, some of them started to sound like actually poetry. I have no idea if this Facebook page is a joke or not, but some of these posts are really heartwarming and something we all want said in-person. For example:
“Dear girl with the short brunette hair and bright green eyes: talking to you on the painstakingly long elevator ride from the music school to Terraces was the highlight of my afternoon. I don’t come by that side of campus often, but if I ever do I hope we run into each other again.”
Or
“To the guy who always chills at late night around 10pm and wears really tight skinny jeans: I wanted to thank you for coming to my performance the other night. And yes, one of those songs was for you…”
I didn’t realize that people on campus were crushing so hard; this makes me feel like we are back in 3rd grade, passing secret admirer notes to each other. It is pages like these that make me smile and wonder if we are not giving each other or even ourselves enough real life chances. I am curious to see how this page takes off and if people are really writing their true emotions. If you are, I applaud you because that takes a lot of courage to put your feelings out on Facebook for the whole campus and your “crush” to see.
