Dollar Store Blues: What to do While the Dollar Store is Closed in Ithaca

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

Picture this: You roll out of bed, bundle yourself up to brace the frosty Ithaca air and bear mother nature to make it to the TCAT stop. After almost an hour of your TCAT riding adventure you finally pull up to the Walmart plaza. With a grin on your face and coins in your pocket you walk up to the front of Dollar Tree only to find that it’s temporarily closed. No! Don’t worry we’re all mourning the temporary closing of the well beloved Dollar Tree. But, for the mean time, how are you going to get your fix on low priced knick-knacks? Luckily there are plenty of alternatives still out there.

1. Target Dollar Store

There’s no one who can deny that Target’s dollar section is a magical place. As kids we all knew this was that one section where we could get Mom to buy us something solely based on the extremely low prices. But still, now as a college student, it’s not easy to walk into a Target and simply pass by the dollar section without picking up something… or 10. This section has everything from candles to cute notecards to unique Japanese candy.

2. Walmart Clearance

Many people will go to Dollar Tree in search of cheap craft items for creating just about anything. Most shoppers don’t want to spend big bucks on little things like ribbon or beads at name brand craft stores. Well luckily, not only does Walmart’s craft section have quality low cost items, their clearance section in the craft isle is huge! Countless products are marked down to below one dollar. And yes, they are too good to pass up. The same goes for the clearance sections of other departments in Walmart. If you just take the time to look you’ll find some crazy deals!

3. Claire’s

It may sound crazy to think that the store where you got your first piercing or picked up some cool charms for your bracelet can now be a good bargain store for college students. Claire’s offers some very simple jewelry at low prices as well as other goofy items you might find at Dollar Tree. If you have a themed party or just want to get some accessories to make an outfit wild, Claire’s has all the low price pieces you’re looking for!
