It’s Time: Festival Season is Here!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

It’s that time of year again, that’s right, it’s festival season! Starting from April up until September, there are music festivals all over the states to fill your summers up with music and excitement. There are quite a bit of festivals and you’re guaranteed to find the one that’s perfect for you!

Shaky Knees Festival

Where: Atlanta, GA

When: May 13th-15th, 2016

Tickets: $215

The Shaky Knees Festival happens every year in Atlanta, Georgia and is known to have artists that are more on the alternative side. While festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza have a mix of Indie-Alternative and Electronic artists, Shaky Knees is predominantly alternative. Some of the artists that are performing this year include: Cold War Kids, Florence + The Machine, Walk The Moon, Jane’s Addiction, Young the Giant, and much more. If some of those artists attract your attention, this festival in Georgia is definitely worth checking out!

Hangout Festival

Where: Gulf Shores, AL

When: May 20th-22nd, 2016

Tickets: $249

This festival takes place in a much more beachy setting than the previous festival. Hangout Fest is known to attract many vacationers who are around the area, as well as celebrities who come to support their artist friends. A little bit different from Shaky Knees, this festival features a wide range of artists that you’re definitely familiar with. Some of the artists on the lineup this year includes: The Weeknd, Magic Man, Ellie Goulding, The Chainsmokers, The Neighbourhood and more! If you’re interested in those artists, as well as chilling by the shores while listening to great artists, this might be the festival for you!

Boston Calling

Where: Boston, MA

When: May 27th-29th, 2016

Tickets: $185

This festival takes place in the middle of the metropolis of Boston and the night time views are breathtaking. The artist lineup is similar to Hangout Fest in that they have a variety of musicians taking the stage, but the artists are limited. This festival has a smaller number of artists but there are still 3-days worth of music. Some of the artists on the lineup this year includes: Sia, Disclosure, Odeza, The Front Bottoms, The Vaccines and more! If Boston sounds appealing to you to visit after the semester ends, why not check out Boston Calling?

Governor’s Ball

Where: New York City, NY

When: June 3rd-5th, 2016

Tickets: $275

Want to spend summer in NYC? Putting Governor’s Ball on your list of things to-do might be a good idea. This festival is right in the heart of New York City and the lineup is extensive. In fact, Kanye West is confirmed to be performing at this festival this year (this is major because he hasn’t performed in quite some time!) Some of the artists on this year’s lineup include: The Killers, M83, Chet Faker, Vic Mensa, Of Monsters and Men and more! If you can’t make it to the actual festival but are in the area, Governor’s Ball is also known to throw the best celebrity-studded after parties, so check those out if you can!

Lollapalooza

Where: Chicago, IL

When: July 28th-31st, 2016

Tickets: SOLD OUT

And of course, the hometown favorite, Lollapalooza! Although tickets are currently sold out, there will be tons of people trying to sell some tickets when the festival gets closer. This year is Lollapalooza’s 25th anniversary, so they extended the 3-day festival into a 4-day festival just for this year. Some of the artists on this year’s lineup include: Radiohead, J.Cole, Lana Del Rey, Future, Bastille, G-Eazy and many more! The lineup is incredibly diverse and there is definitely an artist you’ll be interested to see. The other festivals are out of state, but Chicago is only a couple hours away! Once you get a hold of a ticket, definitely check it out this summer!
