Fashion Abroad: Edgy Trends in England

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Looking to add some edge to your everyday look? When it comes to being edgy, British girls take the gold. They can just about pull anything off when it comes to fashion, and their style is completely their own. It’s easy to spot the key pieces every British girl has in her closet that makes her look on point, and gives her that edge.

When walking down the street in England, all you see are knees for miles. If your jeans don’t have rips in the knees, you’re just not doing it right. As someone one who has never really gone for ripped jeans, I thought, “That is so not me.” But after a few weeks in England, all of us abroad found ourselves going to the mall to buy a pair of skinny jeans with ripped knees.

Black skinny jeans with rips in the knees may not seem like much, but it can really add the extra bit of grunge to your look. When you see a girl rocking a pair, you basically think, “I want to be her.” Her life just instantly seems cooler than yours (or maybe it’s just an abroad thing, who knows).

But, that’s not all. If you really want to take it to the next level in terms of edge, pair your ripped skinny jeans with black ankle boots. And not just little ankle booties. I mean boots, with grips on the bottom.

If you thought ripped skinny jeans were the only must-have British item, you’re mistaken because black ankle boots are the perfect complement. In England, you cannot walk anywhere without passing a girl wearing black ankle boots. They wear them everywhere, and I mean everywhere.

I’m actually surprised that I haven’t gotten a pair yet in my time abroad, because I am so obsessed with the idea of them. I will be investing in some in the near future. Girls with their black ankle boots just exude confidence. I guess shoes really do define you.

So, if you’re looking for that extra bit of edge in your wardrobe, add some ripped skinny jeans and black ankle boots. And, just in general, look to the British for fashion tips and tricks because they really do know how to rock anything.

So I may go by that from time to time. The nickname actually serves as the inspiration for my personal blog: Just Meesh.
