5 Best Tactics to Melt your Stress Away

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

1. Exercise

Exercise creates endorphins. Endorphins are a natural painkiller. Therefore, exercise = stress relief. When it comes to stress, exercise is key. Exercise is a good way to blow off steam. Stress comes in all forms, and running with blasting music or even just doing some crunches is a great way to get some of those frustrating jitters out.

2. Candles

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting in a dark room with a lit candle. The flickering light and soft aroma of any smell ranging from lavender to apple spice is extremely calming. There are even candles that help with stress relief because they are made with special calming essential oils. It is a great way to relax and get your mind off of what is causing stress.

3. Breathing

As cliche as it sounds, there is no better stress relief than sitting down and focusing on your breathing. In 1 2 3, out 1 2 3. It’s common that when overly stressed, your heart rate increases. There is nothing worse than feeling like your heart is beating 100 miles per minute. The quickest and easiest relief is breathing. It really is. You just have to focus on your breath, be present, and be in the now.

4. Sugar

When stressed, your blood sugar levels tend to decrease. A stable blood sugar level helps you stay energized and focused. Being a college student is f******* hard. Although the freshman 15 can be real, a sugar fix every once in a while is OK. Especially when extra stressed, ice cream, chocolate, candy, etc.. is highly necessary. The sweet, melting sensation of chocolate in your mouth will almost immediately help melt away the stress.

5. Laughing

Seriously, laugh. You definitely need to. When under immense amounts of stress, there is nothing better than watching a funny movie or calling up a friend and just talking and laughing. It’s an easy distraction and one we often forget about. Laughing literally makes you happy and when happy, you are not thinking about how stressed you might be. It’s a really good temporary fix and eases a lot of pain.
