Sugar Mama Bakery

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Gourmet cupcakes seem to be all the craze these days.  It’s hard to believe the buzz began with the forever fashionable show Sex In The City back in 2000.  Women everywhere were watching the beloved show for fashion trends and dating advice. In one episode, Miranda and Carrie were filmed in Magnolia Bakery treating themselves to gourmet cupcakes.  Just like the fans of Sex In The City, the cupcake bug has bitten our very own Uptown Normal.

HerCampus spread the word back in November when That’s So Sweet opened near Uptown Circle.  Their employees are very knowledgeable about their products and generously helpful.  However, on January 24, That’s So Sweet received some friendly competition when Sugar Mama Bakery opened just down the street.

Sugar Mama Bakery has a second location in downtown Bloomington, which opened just over a year ago.  With over 7,000 likes on Facebook, Sugar Mama’s is connected with the Bloomington-Normal community in a number of ways.

In the past, Sugar Mama’s Bakery has partnered with Big Brother Big Sisters of Central Illinois (BBBSCI), offering free cupcakes to those who sign up to be a Big Brother or Big Sister.  Even more, they donated all of the proceeds from their S’more cupcakes to BBBSCI.

With Valentine’s Day approaching quickly, Sugar Mama is making gift giving easy.  For just $9, you can give your valentine or BFF a 6-pack of assorted mini cupcakes!  Pre-ordering can be done in-store or over the phone.

Best of all for college students, if you show your college ID when you purchase some sweets, they will throw in an extra mini cupcake for free!  This sweet deal only runs on Thursdays so mark your calendars.

Currently, their flavors include: Vanilla Bean, Birthday Cake, Chocolate Chocolate, Fluffernutter and other mouth-watering flavors.  They even kept in mind those with dietary restrictions and have gluten free and vegan cupcakes available.  Last Wednesday they posted on their Facebook about a flavor called The Hipster—an all vegan cupcake made with a PBR base and topped with vegan vanilla buttercream.

So the question remains, is Uptown is big enough for two Cupcake Shops? Make sure to check out both bakeries to see for yourself which one has the best flavors of your liking!
