Movie Night: 7 Winter Must See’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

As college kids, we are constantly overwhelmed with exams, our jobs, sports, clubs, and any other extracurriculars we decide to pile on.  We live in weekly schedules aching for Thursday night to arrive.  With these cold winter nights, the walk to parties is anything but fun. Let’s be real, you always end up regretting your choice of minimal clothing and your hair ends up looking like you did a walk of shame through the Watterson wind tunnel anyways.  An alternative is spending these chilly nights curled up and watching movies with some of our favorite guys (better than the ones who don’t call back, right?)

1. 21 Jump Street. Let’s start off with a recent remake of a classic film.  Mediocre cops (Channing Tatum [cue swoon] and Jonah Hill [cue funny guy swoon]) work undercover to crack a high school drug circuit.  If you’re looking for some comic relief with a little action, this is your flick.  Plus, you not only get a Franco brother (my favorites) in it but also a stellar cameo from the original cast: Johnny Depp.  This stacked crew of men is definitely a win/win.

2. 500 Days of Summer. Considering it’s not the typical cheesy relationship, this might be a chick flick you can actually convince your boyfriend to watch.  It’s the story of a man who falls for a woman that does not believe in love.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoey Deschanel team up for a not-so-classic love story that is much more realistic than The Notebook.  Sorry Allie and Noah, this couple gets my thumbs up for romantic films.

3. Crazy Stupid Love. One more romantic comedy to add to the list.  In this one, studs Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling set out into the dating world.  This movie is not only funny, but has a twist you will never see coming.  Great choice to snuggle up on the couch to. And come on, just LOOK at how Ryan Gosling looks in the movie. You can’t say no.

4. Donnie Darko. If you’re looking for something a little “darker” on these cold nights, take a peek at Jake Gyllenhaal in this movie.  This warped film of a troubled teen is sure to be one to get your mind racing.

5. The Dark Knight Rises. Our super hero Christian Bale does it again with an amazing performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman.  If you’re into the action/superhero movies, this is one that will definitely satisfy.  This was easily one of the best films I have seen in a long time.  Also, props to Christopher Nolan for never disappointing.

7. Easy A. If you’re in for a night with the girls, Easy A is always a solid option.  With witty one-liners and Penn Badgley shirtless…this is a no brainer.  Plus, Emma Stone captures how every girl wishes for once “her life could be like a 80s movie.”
