Lindsay’s Fashion Blog: Why thrift store shopping may be the new black

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Welcome to college. We are surrounded with parties, boys, finals, oh and always being flat broke. Money goes into the account and out within days paying for books, items for your dorm, and let’s face it Friday night drinks. What ends up lacking nowadays for me is my wardrobe, money goes elsewhere and I’m drooling on my keyboard looking at Urban Outfitters. Hello Christmas list, too soon? I digress, while I may not be able to afford those items I go to the next best thing- thrift stores.

Many of you are probably cringing at the idea of buying someone’s old clothes, trust me I hated it myself. But when finding my own style I considered all modes of where to buy my clothes. The prices at the thrift store are as low as the Fabulous Finds you see at Forever 21 or even lower. I can go into a thrift store with twenty bucks and come out with pants, blazers, and blouses galore (notice I made it plural). Being on a budget is not the greatest thing ever, so when you can’t splurge visit a Goodwill store your wallet will thank you.

I’m pretty sure no one likes it when they see that someone else has on the same dress or pair of shoes. Just the other day I saw someone had the same hoodie that I have, I didn’t wear it but thank my lucky stars I didn’t. Of course it’s not the end of the world
but I like knowing no one else has the same clothes I have. Shopping at the thrift store has this guarantee the pieces that you buy are unique and have their own story to it. You may look at a shirt and wonder who could have worn this, the personality, the history of it. People give away their clothes and to them it was trash but to you it could be treasure. No one else will have that same shirt you just bought and I love that feeling! I have found countless items found at thrift stores that I prefer over brand named items. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy shopping at Guess as much as the next gal but the thrift store shopping has a special place in my heart.

Can’t seem to justify that blazer for $50? Don’t worry I can’t either so I head to the thrift store to find the exact blazer for… wait for it… four bucks! Honestly if that doesn’t make you want to jump for joy, I don’t know what will. I can find just about any item I see online at the thrift store for much cheaper that puts a smile on my face because I know in the long run I saved so much money. I have seen outfits that look expensive but they are completely thrifted and cost the equivalent to those jeans one would see at Abercrombie & Fitch. When I get those deals I can’t help but channel Charlie Sheen “Winning!”

Thrift store shopping should not have negative connotations with it. Shopping in general is a great past time for girls. I find it to be relaxing actually. Give it a try and see if it’s to your liking. It won’t be for everyone but it will certainly be beneficial to someone out there. Just don’t knock it ‘till you try it, happy thrifting!
