The Journey of Finding Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

This has been the hardest journey of my life – finding myself.

I tried multiple things to see who I wanted to be in life (some good, some bad), before I realized – I just want to be me.

I moved away.

I traveled.

I tried new things.

I didn’t try new things.

I joined a church.

I left a church.

I dated.

I was alone.

I gained new friends.

I lost old friends.

I lost focus.

I hurt my mom.

I got closer with my mom.

I picked a career.

I got good grades.

I networked.

I am independent.

I have faith in myself.

I opened my eyes.

I realize what I want.

I put myself first.

I accept myself for who I want to be.

I don’t care what others want me to be.

I am selfish, in the best way possible.

I love myself.

In order to find yourself, you have to stop searching.

You have to accept yourself for who you are.

You have to be happy with yourself.

You have to let yourself live life the way you want to.

Life isn’t about what anyone else wants for yourself, it’s about what you want.

Finding yourself takes time.

It doesn’t happen over night – but when it happens you’ll know.

It feels like the biggest relief. Like a weight has been lifted off of your shoulders.

It’s when you finally fall in love with yourself for who you are.

When you feel you’re struggling with who you are, just remember that one day you will know.

Don’t rush it. Don’t try too hard. Just simply be yourself and let yourself be happy no matter what.

The journey is crazy – but the destination is remarkable.
