ISU Fashion Show Designer Spotlight: Veronica Glatt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Veronica Glatt has been handmaking her own apparel items since the age of 13. Impressive right?! Veronica has a unique style, and hopes to provide unique, alternative apparel that is affordable to all people. When Veronica isn’t working on her collection for the 2017 ISU fashion show, she is thinking about what she is going to do next for her business. Read on to find out more!

Her Campus: Have you always been a fashion major?

Veronica: I received my Associate of the Arts from Heartland Community College, but I have been a Fashion Design Major my entire time at Illinois State University.

Her Campus: What inspires you to do the work you do?

Veronica: I have been sewing garments regularly since I was thirteen years old. I was always interested in creating my own custom items no one else would have. When I was fifteen I began selling my handmade apparel online under the name NyctoCryptClothing and opened my Etsy.com and Storenvy.com stores. My shop inspires me to do the work I do. I love when customers send me photos or leave heartfelt reviews. My goal is to provide unique, alternative apparel that is affordable to lower and middle income people.

Her Campus: Tell us something interesting about yourself that sets you apart from other designers:

Veronica: I have already been a small business owner for four years in May and I have been selling my items at festivals for 3 years as well. I do not plan on joining a design firm and would rather run my own business than work for a more famous, established brand.

Her Campus: Other than designing for the fashion show, what other projects are you working on right now?

Veronica: Currently I am not working on any other sewing projects besides items for the fashion show. After my designs are done though, I can’t wait to take my shops off vacation so I can make items for customers again!

Her Campus: What’s your favorite part about the FDM program?

Veronica: My favorite part of the FDM program is my access to tools and information. Apparel techniques can be easily learned during FDM and the sewing and textiles labs are fantastic.

Her Campus: What are your plans after college?

Veronica: After college I plan to work as much as possible and sell as many items I have made as possible in order to build funds. Eventually I want to move to the west, continue on with my online business, and become a regular vendor at art, craft, and music festivals.

Her Campus: As far as your collection for the 2017 fashion show, can you give us an idea of what we can expect?

Veronica: My collection is inspired by maximilism, J-fashion, lingerie fashion, alternative fashion, sustainability, and an otherworldly aesthetic. You can expect many layers and separates in dark and pastel colors. Many of my fabrics used were repurposed, second-hand or vintage, so be on the lookout for unexpected and resourceful textiles as well!

Her Campus: Your collection sounds so different from many collections! We can’t wait to see it at the show.

Tickets for the 2017 Illinois State Fashion Show are on sale at the Braden Box Office, or online at Ticketmaster.com. The show is April 13th with light refreshments at 5 p.m. and a show start time of 7 p.m.
