How To: Survive Winter At ISU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Most days, it’s already hard enough to get yourself out of bed to go to class. But in the winter months, it’s near impossible. We’re here to help you get through the next few weeks with a step-by-step guide on how to survive in this frozen tundra.

1. Wake up and check for a cancelled class email.

Always have hope.

2. Sulk in the disappointment of not getting one.

Realize you live in Illinois, snow days don’t exist, and even if the buses are drifting all the way down Main, you probably still have class.

3. Debate going to class every morning while lying in bed.

Is today reallyyyyy that necessary?

4.  Bust open your piggy bank to pay for parking.

A dollar an hour? Fine, as long as you don’t have to walk.

5.  Realize that money was supposed to go towards a hot coffee after class.

Or literally anything hot. Your hands need it.

6. Buy the coffee anyway.

“Yeah, can I have that boiling?”

7. Realize THAT money was supposed to go towards a DD this weekend.

Again, you’re not walking anywhere. Maybe you’ll just stay in! …Or not.

8. Avoid the Watterson wind tunnel at all costs.

Unless you enjoy losing feeling in your face.

9. Contemplate going into full hibernation

Eat carbs. Stay warm. Sleep forever.

10. Cry on your way to class.

Why couldn’t you just stay wrapped up in bed all day?

11. Embrace the fact that your tears are now frozen to your face.

Maybe it’s good for your skin?!

12. Enjoy the third degree burns on your skin from hot showers.

Ahh, nothing better than scalding water on frozen skin.

13. Reminisce on those 50 degree days in December.

The good ol’ days. Global warming, where are you now that I need ya?

14. Feel guilty for actually wanting global warming.

It’s fine. Go recycle something.

15. Dream about spring break.

Unless, of course, you’ll still be stuck in this ENDLESS WINTER.

16. Spend class time looking up flights to literally anywhere warmer than here.

It’s only $300 to fly to Florida!! You should go right now.

17. Look up the weather for warmer cities.

80 DEGREES AND SUNNY IN LA. IT’S NOT FAIR.

18. Convince yourself that you’ll leave Illinois soon.

Ehhhh, probably not though.

19. Realize you’ll go through all of this again next year.

No matter how many winters you go through, you never get used to it. Such a love/hate relationship with Illinois.
