How To: Hot Oil Treatment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Blow-drying, straitening, curling, 3-barrelling.

The list of ways we ruin our hair on a daily basis is endless. I have been searching for a nice and easy way to give my hair a little extra attention. I am getting a little sick of picking my split ends during class when I get a little bored. I found this hot oil treatment on Pinterest and it seemed like the perfect way to re-nutrition my hair.

Supplies:
• oil
• a small bowl
• hair comb
• shower cap

Step 1:
Pour the oil into a small bowl. The amount of oil depends on the length and thickness of your hair, so just guesstimate. You can use any oil you have laying around your house or apartment such as extra virgin olive oil, virgin coconut oil, or even avocado oil.

Step 2:
Warm the oil to body temperature. The oil should never bubble or steam – just put it in the microwave for a few seconds.

Step 3:
Apply oil to hair. Pour a small amount of oil into the palm of your hand and massage it into your scalp. Keep adding oil until all of your hair is covered.

Step 4:
Comb through your hair. You can use your fingers or a comb to make sure that the oil is evenly distributed throughout your hair.

Step 5:
Place your hair in a shower cap. Covering your hair creates a warm environment that makes your hair more porous, allowing the oil to penetrate the hair more effectively.

Step 6:
Let the oil sit in your hair for an hour. Massage your scalp about halfway through to make sure it is setting evenly.

Step 7:
After an hour, shampoo all the oil out of your hair. This might take 1 or 2 washes to remove all the oil.

Congratulations, you now have amazing silky soft hair! … until the weekend when you decide to start the damage train all over again. For the best results, you can repeat this hot oil treatment every month!
