How To: Become a Morning Person in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Are you the type of person that’s always running late and rushing out the  door? Did you forget what you needed…again? Do you happen to be wearing the same outfit as the day before? Have you realized that it’s only noon and you’ve already had 12 cups of coffee? Do you find yourself rolling out of the wrong side of the bed everyday? I hate to break it to you, but if you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re just not a morning person. But don’t be discouraged because I’m here to tell you how to be.

The days of sleeping in until noon or telling your parents you’re “too sick” to go to school are long gone. It’s like all of a sudden, you’re in college and there is something called “responsibility”.  I’m not going to play mom and tell you to go to bed early because honestly, you won’t. However, there are some changes you can make to start your mornings a bit more smoothly.

  1. Set more than one alarm. If you like to “snooze” yourself awake, that’s great. Set your alarm 15 to 30 minutes ahead of the actual time you need to be awake
  2. Prepare yourself. Whether it is packing a lunch, picking out an outfit, or just getting whatever you need for the next morning, just do it the night before. You won’t have to scramble in the morning thinking about what you need, you’ll know exactly where everything is.
  3. Get the “just five more minutes” out of your head. As a “grown up”, it is time to seize the day! Don’t lounge around in your bed until the last second. Get up, play some music, and essentially seize the day. When you have that five extra minutes, it will make you feel so much better and less rushed.
  4. Actually sit down and eat breakfast. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “I HAVE NO TIME FOR THAT”, but you do. Set your alarm 10 minutes earlier, sit down and eat. You will be able to gradually wake up instead of running out the door shoving a granola bar in your mouth.
  5. Stick to a morning routine. Starting a morning routine can make mornings run a lot smoother. Before you know it, you’ll just be running through the motions.
  6. No social media at least 15 minutes before bed. Okay, let me play mom for a second. Obviously the only way to feel less tired is to get more sleep. Therefore, stop scrolling through Twitter and Instagram and get some rest! All the social media you didn’t get a chance to look at will be there in the morning. Besides, during the day you’ll have a more appropriate time to look through your feed…like during class.
