D1RTY No.1ZE

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Wondering who got everyone out on the dance floor at your formal or at that party last weekend? It was probably Nick Winholt and Austin Woo, ISU senior and sophomore. Better known as D1RTY No.1ZE, the two ISU men are gaining fame with their electronic music as they DJ more and more events.

HC: When and how did you guys start to DJ?
Austin: D1RTY No.1ZE started in November of 2010, we’re pretty much fresh into the DJ scene. As far as starting to DJ, Nick was the one who got me into it. It started when I would go watch him DJ in Lambda Chi’s basement before I even knew who he was. It just so happened we had pretty good mutual friends and we were from the same area, so we just started to DJ all the time.

Nick: Music has always been a huge part of our lives and it definitely carried on into college. I have been in bands all my life but college led me down a different path. I started DJing while living in Lambda Chi here at ISU. It started as just a fun hobby. When I found out that Austin wanted to DJ- that’s when we started having fun. Small events turned into large ones. Since then I have started producing bringing our DJing to a whole new level.

HC: What type of events do you guys cover?
D1RTY No.1ZE: Literally everything. We’ve done bars, clubs, house parties, formal events and pretty much everything in between.

HC: What’s your favorite part of DJing?
Austin: For me, aside from loving music in general, and getting to play what I want, it’s all the other fun stuff that comes with it and the people you get to meet.

Nick: I love making people have a good time. The whole process is fun to me. Setting up events, meeting new contacts and artists, and having to adapt to high pressure situations is what I love to do. DJing allows for us to control the energy of the crowd and that’s a great feeling.

HC: Who are you musically inspired by?
D1RTY No.1ZE: Any artist that likes to break ground and start something new. Some of our favorites are Avicii, Afrojack, David Guetta, Skrillex, Chew Fu, Sydney Sampson, Deadmau5, Bassnectar, Dada Life, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Drake and The Dean’s List. We could really go on forever.

HC: The name D1RTY No.1ZE is pretty creative. Is there a story behind it?
D1RTY No.1ZE: We were just brainstorming throughout the week and then it just clicked, we both just said this is it. So we tweaked it to make it fun and original looking.

HC: What are the future plans for D1RTY No.1ZE and where can we see you next?
D1RTY No.1ZE: This semester has been a great start for us but it is only the beginning. This summer will be a huge developmental stage for us. We will be working hard to make the best in electronic music. Our goals are endless. We are hungry for more all the time and will not settle for less. This summer we will be playing in Chicago and hopefully expanding to an out of state show by the beginning of next semester. The future is bright for us. We have got a lot accomplished in our short time as D1R-T No.1ZE so far. Our last big event of the spring semester is May 1st at “Club Milner”. This is only the second time this event has been held and we plan to make a HUGE impact on the ISU campus. Come check us out 10p.m. outside Milner library you won’t want to miss it! Also, be on the lookout for us in the Chicagoland area this summer!
