Athleisure: The Go-To Outfit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Within the past few months, it seems that college women everywhere have found athletic wear to be the go-to outfit. From spandex leggings to Nike Free Runs, college women are choosing athletic apparel when they set off for morning lecture. It sounds like this is the result of women going to the gym more often or living a healthier lifestyle, but it doesn’t entirely mean that. This new fashion statement has been coined athleisure for the athletic look with the leisure intention.

Even if you’re not going to the rec to work out and you’re wearing athletic wear, you’re still one step closer to working out, right? Here are five ways ISU students have rocked this casual fashion go-to.

Amanda, Junior

“I’m the type of girl who is a wannabe athlete. So that’s where athleisure comes in! It’s super cute and comfortable, and when I wear it, it makes me feel like I am sporty. My Zella jacket and leggings are among the many comfy/leisurely outfits I love to wear throughout the day.”

Rachel, Junior

“I like comfy clothes and it just so happens that Nike and Under Armor have found magic materials like spandex, cotton and dri-fit. No one wants to go to class in stiff jeans thus the key staple to every girl’s wardrobe, leggings. We all know the classrooms can be a bit drafty so a pullover/quarter zip is the perfect solution. I’ll be honest, I don’t workout but I dress like this to class fairly regularly and if ever decided to get the urge to hit the gym, at least I’m prepared. Athleisure is cute, comfy and a universal style for college women; I’m all for it!”

Lizzie, Junior

“Between balancing 3 to 5 hour classes, interning as an on call sexual assault advocate and exercise, I’m always on the go. I love to wear workout clothes for comfort and convenience, whether they be from Target or Lululemon. This way I’m always ready to head to the gym or for whatever life throws at me.”

Michelle, Senior

“As a fitness instructor, I live my life in my gym shoes and Nike wear. When I’m not in the gym, I’m either at the library, in class, or hanging out with my friends. That’s where this comfy and cute style comes in! For the moments I’m not in the gym I prefer a mix between ‘I want to be comfortable in what I’m wearing,’ but also ‘I want to be presentable and stylish.’ That’s why I love this look!”

Ally, Senior

“Being in the Kinesiology department at ISU, athletic apparel is all around me. Athleisure is easy to put together with many different options. I love this style because to me it’s comfortable, but I still feel confident and cute in what I’m wearing.”

Whatever the reason is to wear athleisure, it’ll always be fashionably acceptable.
