5 New Year’s Resolutions You Should Make and Keep

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Let’s be honest, creating and sticking to a New Year’s resolution is awful and you end up forgetting it by the time March rolls around. Here are five simple resolutions that you should consider making and keeping, because it will not only make you happier, but it will make your life much less stressful.

  1. Eat HealthyEating healthy is difficult, especially when there’s a Chipotle and Noodles & Company right down the street. No matter how good your favorite fast food dish sounds, you probably shouldn’t eat it. A Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino has 470 calories and 66 grams of sugar (no matter how good it may taste, these numbers are way too high for a drink). For 2015, you should start eating better. Your body is a “temple” and you should treat it right. You can find delicious healthy recipes online for free!
  2. Save your money This is a New Year’s resolution that I know I’m going to have trouble keeping. I have a shopping addiction that is hard to tame, but I know that I need to start saving my money. Think about it; life after college is going to be rough. We will no longer have things handed to us and money will no longer be easy to access. Saving money is hard, but it will be worth it in the long run. It’s better to start saving now, so that when you get out of college you can go out and get your own place or car. It’s going to be hard, but I promise you do not need that new outfit on display at Forever 21.
  3. Get rid of the toxic people in your lifeIn order for 2015 to be a good year, you should cut off the toxic people involved in your life. It may be a friend or it may be the guy who only calls you when he wants to hook-up. Stop letting these people ruin your life! It’s going to be hard to cut them out, but it will be for the best. People who make you feel bad about yourself should not even be worth your time. You’re young… hang out with people who make you feel happy!
  4. Stop procrastinatingGet your stuff done. It’s as easy as that. The sooner you get your assignments, cleaning, and other things done, the quicker you get to spend time doing things you want to do. When you wait until the last minute to do projects, it causes unneeded stress and anxiety. Finish your project before the due date and you will feel like the world is lifted from your shoulders.
  5. Do something outside of your comfort zoneI’m not saying that you should do something crazy everyday that could possibly put you in danger, but do or try something that you usually wouldn’t. Is pasta your go-to meal? Why not try something Mediterranean? By doing stuff outside of your comfort zone, you will experience new things that you never imagined. Create a bucket list for yourself and try finishing all of them before the end of the year. You’ll be surprised at how much fun you have.
