I believe in the practice of buying expensive underwear. Because you can and because you deserve it. Because there is a certain kind of spiritual power one can only obtain by wearing a matching set of undergarments under plain street clothes. Like Clark Kent, I want to maintain superman’s ego beneath a calm exterior. Fancy underpants will remind you that there is always more than meets the eye behind every person you meet, including yourself.

I believe that buying expensive underwear is also declaration of self-love. Because really, if you can’t even appreciate yourself in its most modest form, how can you expect to love yourself in its entirety either? Don’t buy the underwear simply for the guy you hope will someday take them off for you; no, buy them because you know that every part of you (including your rear) deserves the best that money can buy. I believe that frivolity isn’t always an evil thing, and that vanity is sometimes a necessity. Loving yourself is just as important as loving other people, and if buying a lacy bra helps you get there, then more power to you. I believe that if you can always be confident about at least one thing in yourself, success will always be much closer in your horizon, even if that thing is something just as humble as your underpants.

So go ahead, take advantage of that sale at Victoria’s Secret, regardless of your mother’s judgment, an empty wallet, or even your own conservative nature. Because really, if you absolutely have to waste your money on something that’s sole purpose in life is to cover your crotch, why not make the best of it?

Alex is a first-year at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She plans to double major in comparative literature and Russian area studies, hopefully to pursue a career in academia after graduation. On campus she participates in the wind ensemble, the drama club, and a club called One-On-One Friendship where she uses video chat to help teach Indonesian students how to speak English. She has always loved reading and writing, and thinks HerCampus is great outlet for her to share those passions with the internet!
