The Hunger Games: In Theaters and On Your Nails

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Humboldt chapter.

In the dystopia of Panem, no one is safe. “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins is set in the distant future where North America has been transformed into a society of 12 districts ruled by an overbearing capitol. It follows the dramatic change in the life of Katniss Everdeen and the world around her. With the words “I volunteer as tribute,” Katniss Everdeen embarks on a terrifying odyssey.

The Hunger Games is about romance, trust, confusion, and determination. In the arena where Katniss must fight 23 other Panem children to the death, “winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death”.

This one girl holds the hearts of two young men and the attention of an entire nation.

The Hunger Games are held every year in Panem. The Hunger Games is a competition in which each of the twelve districts select two tributes. The tributes are between the ages of 12-18, one male and one female. These tributes are sent to the capitol to train and then placed in a meticulously designed arena where only one will come out alive. Everyone at home is required to watch. It is live television. It is entertainment.

Each of the twelve districts are in charge of providing a certain resource to Panem. District 12, Katniss’s home, is responsible for coal production. The occupation of each district gives the each tribute an advantage in the gruesome Hunger Games.

To get a sense of Panem and its twelve districts here are some nail polish designs inspired by Districts 1, 9 and 13. These designs are made by Kailey Brown, a Manicurist from Marinello Schools of Beauty.

On your way to watch the hunger games don’t hesitate to use these designs. They are beautiful and will totally put you in the hunger game spirit.

Panem is full of surprises; it will keep you on your toes. In the words of Effie Trinket: “Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favor.”
