How to: Internship?

To say the least, the internship process is stressful for a college student who has little to no “real world” experience. However, it can also be rewarding, fun, and life-changing all at the same time.

Here are the steps to take when going for that internship at your dream company (that is, if you even have a dream company):

1. Get informed. Read up on companies.

If you don’t know where to start… check your school career development center to see what’s happening around town. They’ll have plenty of opportunities available. Even if you don’t find anything interesting, you will have a better idea of what you like and dislike.

2. Applications…

So, you found a couple of internships you might want to try, now it’s time to apply! Remember, this process is the most grueling. Your resume, cover letter, and references should perfectly embody who you are and what you can do.

Biggest tip: Get a head start!

3. Now, wait.

All your applications have been submitted, and the hardest part is over. Phew! Now, we wait. Typically, someone will hit you up after a week to schedule an interview. If you don’t hear back, it never hurts to follow up with the company to check your app status.

4. The Interview

OMG! You got the invite for an interview! Congratulations, you’re one step closer to being employed. Now, find an outfit and practice your 30 second pitch. Don’t be intimidated by the employer. Make sure you ask questions, engage, and make eye contact. Look alive, intern!

5. You got the job!

Great work, girl! You got that internship! Now’s your chance to make an impression. Clearly you have what it takes to succeed in that environment. Be memorable and slay!!!!
