Practical Gift Ideas for College Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

Picking out a holiday gift for a college student can be a bit difficult, especially if you want to stay within your price range. Not only do you have to factor in your budget, but you also want the gift to be practical. Well, we’re here to make the struggle a little less complicated this holiday season with some useful and inexpensive gift ideas.

For Her

Nail Polish. Mix and match with a few of their favorite colors and a few bold colors. Of course OPI or Essie would be ideal, but at about $8.00 per bottle, you would probably be able to get them only one. However, if you get a brand from a drug store, such as Sinful Colors, it will probably only costs $2 per bottle. You could get a few colors and throw in a nail file as an added bonus.

Scarves. Seasonable and fashionable. ‘Tis the season for cold weather…hence, a scarf can be the perfect gift. It can add to an outfit and keep your neck warm. Many girls already have a scarf collection anyway; why not help them add to it?

For Him

Shaving Kit. Personal hygiene is just as important to guys as it is to us. Guys need to groom their facial hair regularly, but going to a professional can get pricey. A shaving kit will provide them with something they will actually use, especially if they’re really hairy.

Food. What guy doesn’t like food? Better question, what guy doesn’t DEVOUR everything on their plate? If you can cook, cook him a hot meal that he will love. If you can’t cook, get him a gift basket filled with common snacks, candies, and juices. Whatever food you get him will be appreciated, just make sure you put a bit of effort into putting it together.

For Both

Gift Cards.Just about every chain business provides gift cards. Think about their favorite place to eat or shop and put however much you can spare to give them on the card. If you don’t know their favorite place, Starbucks and iTunes gift cards are usually appreciated. The best part about buying gift cards is that there isn’t a sales tax. Hooray for no tax!

Headphones. With the travel season among us, many students will need to listen to music on their iPods and phones while taking those long road trips with their parents. A good pair of ear buds are always useful. Besides, if they don’t put the headphones to use immediately, they will down the line when their other pair breaks.
