The 5 Couples You Meet on The Hill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

Did you know that around 60% of Holy Cross graduates marry other graduates? That crazy number means that there are always romances blossoming on the Hill. Here’s a list of the five types of couples you’re most likely to see—and, according to that statistic, be a part of one day!

   1. The Super Athletic Couple

This couple is so physically fit you cannot believe it. They spend a combined total of about thirty hours a week at the gym, and that isn’t even counting their varsity sports practices. They are constantly jogging around campus side-by-side with stopwatches on their wrists so that they can be sure they beat their best times again. Even though to the outsiders, it seems that all these two have in common are their rockin bods, we all know their love runs deep.

   2. The “Basically Already Engaged” Couple

These two are the first ones that come to mind when you think “Campus Couple.” Not only are they constantly together chatting in Cool Beans or dancing with each other at parties, their social media accounts are really just chronicles of their picture-perfect romance. They’re so unbelivably cute you literally can’t even when you see them. They may be the butt of some of your jokes but that’s just out of jealousy (Nicholas Sparks gets his love stories from these two so..). They make you believe true love is real and make your heart melt!

   3. The “They Met at Mass” Couple

Normally I wouldn’t describe homilies as “adorable,” but the other Sunday I heard one that was so precious I can’t help it. The priest told a story of a boy at Holy Cross who liked a girl but wasn’t sure how to approach her. Doing his best not to come on too strong, the boy asked his crush to come to Mass with him (only at Holy Cross right??). After that fateful Sunday night Mass, they began to date. The couple dated long distance after graduation, and decided to meet at Holy Cross one Sunday to hear a Father K sermon (they are the best). After the mass, this Holy Cross cutie proposed to his long time sweetheart. The couple then contacted Father K and had him deliver the sermon at their marriage in the Holy Cross chapel. Every girl at Mass that night was secretly hoping tht that would be them in a few years. The “Met at Mass” couple is super involved on campus, and can usually be spotted at the 7 PM Mass on Sunday nights or at “Holla at the Colla” on Thursdays in Coolbeans. They may take Mission Trips or hang out of the Campion House together—whatever they do, though, they inspire us all to pursue a relationship with God and to live the Jesuit mission! God bless.

   4. The “They Were Best Friends and Now They Love Each Other” Couple

These two clicked immediately while in the same group during fall orientation or as partners in a group project, but their relationship was nothing more than friendly at first. They always insisted that the gleeful grins they wore around each other meant nothing more than that they were great friends. Others knew from the beginning that they were meant to be, but they stubbornly denied it. It wasn’t until outsiders started making moves on these two cuties that they realized they just wanted to be with each other. Now that they’re finally together, you can’t stop smiling when you pass them in the halls and thinking about what a great love story they’ll have to tell their grandkids.

   5. The High School Sweethearts

Most high school romances don’t survive the transition from high school to college, but the ones that do are like gemstones—beautiful, resilient, and rare! Some couples that break up before college find themselves getting back together after realizing they are meant to be. Others remain together and connect over Skype, care packages, and super fun weekend visits. I know a few couples like this at HC, and they are super cute!I totally admire anyone who can make a romance like this last, and just for the record: if you truly have faith in your relationship, you shouldn’t listen to the cynics. One of my best friends here is the daughter of a Holy Cross graduate. This girl’s mother dated her high-school boyfriend long-distance throughout her time at the Hill, and now they’re married with three children. Long story short? If you believe you can make it, you will!
