Your Ultimate Guide to Eating Healthy at College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Being a college student comes with its challenges like crazy schedules and being on a pretty tight budget. With limited free-time during the week, we tend to look for the fastest and easiest ways to get meals. Creating and maintaining a healthy diet on a college campus usually ends up being one of the aspects of life we struggle with or sacrifice, altogether.

Just because you are in college does not mean you can’t practice healthy eating habits. Making even the smallest adjustments to your eating habits can make all the difference.

1. Fruit is your friend

Running late to class? Instead of grabbing a bag of chips, replace it with a piece of fruit. Fast food does not have to be junk food. If you replace your snack with a fruit, like a banana or an apple, then you are saving yourself unhealthy calories, as well as giving your body food that it can turn into energy. This will help you stay focus in your next class.

2. Keep your fridge stocked with healthy food

We all get those late-night munchies so instead of stocking up on candy and chips, substitute them for healthier options. Replace chips and dip with carrots and hummus or veggies with ranch. If you’re looking for something sweeter then keep a stock of fruit, like raspberries and strawberries. This way when it’s 11 p.m. and you’re looking to snack you won’t be tempted to eat any junk foods.

3. Satisfy your cravings

Just because you want to create a healthier lifestyle does not mean you should completely swear off junk food. If you ever get a craving for something like chocolate or ice cream, the best thing to do is just eat it in moderation. Cravings left unsatisfied for a long period of time can actually lead to you bingeing or eating a large amount of it at once.

4. Drink water

Always bring a water bottle with you to class! Not only will it leave you refreshed, but it will save you the swipes as well. Coffee, soda, and energy drinks will do nothing for you except add to your unhealthy habits. Water is the best drink for you.

5. Get active

Maybe you’re not ready to completely change your eating habits, and that’s ok. It’s all about baby steps. In addition to making a conscious effort to eat healthier, you should try to find time to get exercise. Whether you join an intramural/club sport, take a fitness class, or even just work out on your own. Working out is a major step towards living a healthier lifestyle.

The most important thing to remember when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle in college is that it takes time and effort. With a little hard work, you could replace your unhealthy habits with good ones in no time!
