Best and Worst Dressed: Oscars 2014 Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Oscar Sunday is the single most important day of the year for actors to lose the phony excuse of “not being in the industry for the fancy dresses and after-parties” and give it their all on the red carpet. While some stars impressed us with iconic pieces, others were extremely underwhelming on their big night. Here’s who dazzled and who disgusted; the best and the worst dressed of the 2014 Academy Awards:

Best Dressed

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita has been wowing us all with her exquisite fashion choices this whole award season, and it was nice to see her end with yet another flawless choice (and a well-deserved Academy Award!) The 12 Years A Slave star looked breathtaking in her custom-made Prada gown drenched in pastel blue. This may have been her best color choice all season, but is there any color that doesn’t look incredible with this girl’s complexion? She even told Ryan Seacrest that the “Nairobi blue” color was picked to pay homage to her hometown in Kenya. How sweet is she?

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson was the complete epitome of movie star elegance this year. In this spring 2014 Versace gown, she stole the red carpet. Everything from the plunging neckline to the cape that revealed an open back screamed old Hollywood glam; classy, sexy, sophisticated, and timeless! Ladies, THIS is how you dress for the Oscars!

Bradley Cooper

The always-charming Bradley Cooper worked the red carpet in this suit by Tom Ford. The sharp American Hustle star may not have won an Oscar, but he won the hearts of everyone who laid eyes on him. Swoooon.

Sandra Bullock

The Gravity star, like Hudson, pulled off a timeless look in this dark navy Alexander McQueen gown. Sandra looked classy and slim with the crossover pulling her in at the waistline. She completed the ensemble with soft curls and simple jewelry. Her effortless look made her one of the most stunning leading ladies of the night.

Jennifer Lawrence

Always being one of the most anticipated stars to see, Jennifer Lawrence never disappoints! As the current face of Dior, the American Hustle nominee rocked it in a dress that brought us back to her very first Oscars appearance. The peplum-like dress was paired with a $2 million Neil Lane necklace to top off one of the simplest yet most elegant looks of the night. And we were all so glad to see no tears or broken ankles! Watch your step, J.Law!

Zac Efron

Heartthrob Zac Efron charmed everyone in his Calvin Klein tux and vintage Rolex. Being one of the best-dressed men of the night, Efron stood out in his unique and adorable skinny tie.

Olivia Wilde

A very pregnant Olivia Wilde flaunted her baby bump to produce the most gorgeous award show outfits time and time again. She (and her baby) sported this Valentino design, proving that black isn’t always boring and being pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t still be glamorous. This soon-to-be Mommy was dressed to perfection, topped with the priceless glow of a lifetime. Can we all look this flawless pregnant, please??

Worst Dressed

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick turned out to be one of the most disappointing appearances of the night. This J. Mendel dress was all over the place. Between the sheer top, red design in the mid-section, and pleated skirt, this was one giant mess. And what was going on with that Angelina-inspired pose? This was honestly just awkward.

Pharrell

Oscar nominee Pharrell was definitely the talk of the night for coming in tuxedo shorts. Although he stood out and got much recognition, the Academy Awards is never the place to make major fashion statements. I thought wearing shorts to such a prestigious event was almost disrespectful to the formality of the Oscars.

Elsa Pataky

I would never be one to pick on a pregnant woman, especially one as beautiful as Elsa Pataky, but who told her this looked good? This dress, too, was all over the place, and it just made it look like her baby bump was weighing her down big time. Congrats on the twins though!
