8 Ways To Make Long Distance Work Over The Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

If you’ve met your boyfriend at school and you don’t live close you’re probably freaking out over doing the whole long distance thing. I promise you, it’s not as hard as people make it out to be. As long as you’re both dedicated to the relationship, you will get through these next few months no problem!

1. Trust Each Other

The key to a healthy and happy relationship is trust. You have to trust that when your significant other is home he wont be hooking up with old flames or flirting with girls when he’s at the beach. He has a right to spend time with his girl friends, so you just need to trust that he isn’t doing anything he shouldn’t.

2. Love Letters

Send each other cute handwritten letters. These are a little bit more sentimental and time will pass quickly when you’re constantly writing and receiving letters.

3. Communicate

You NEED to communicate. Be open with one another. If you’re worried or stressed, tell him. Any built up feelings you don’t communicate to one another will only hurt your relationship.

4. Mini Vaca’s

Depending on distance and costs, take mini vacations visiting each other. Spend one week together at the end of June at his house, and maybe another week together at the end of July at your house. That way you will be spending about a week of each month together and by the time fall semester comes it won’t be like you haven’t seen each other all summer.

5. FaceTime Dates

FaceTime is a lifesaver and this isn’t only good for long distance relationships, but long distance friendships too. Schedule a date and dress cute. It will give you something to look forward to.

6. Care Packages

Send each other cute little gifts! It can be as simple as a beach care package with sunscreen, tanning oil, and aloe. Maybe even throw in a pair of sunglasses.

7. Make Future Plans

Future plans will give you something to look forward to once you get back and instead of bumming out that you can’t spend the summer together you’ll be excited for the fall semester.

8. Don’t Get Jealous

This goes hand in hand with trusting one another. Don’t get jealous if he’s spending time with his girl friends.
