5 of the Best Fragrances That You’ve Never Heard Of

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

Back in high school and throughout my first year of college, I was pretty much oblivious to the world of fragrance. If you asked me what I was wearing, it was probably something from Bath and Bodyworks but to be totally honest, no one really complimented me on my smell back then. Not that I smelled bad per say, just because I didn’t think it was necessary to splurge on a fancy bottle of perfume. Then during my Sophomore year I bought a perfume that I had been admiring for years, Oh Lola by Marc Jacobs. And that was when I learned the difference between cheap body mists and actual perfumes. However, while I liked Oh Lola, I couldn’t help feel like I smelled like every other girl on my campus. Therefore as a unique unicorn, I decided to embark on a quest to find a perfume that would set me apart from a crowd. Along the way, there were hits and there were misses, but never the less, here are my top 5 fragrances for one of a kind bitches.

MY TOP EVERYDAY FRAGRANCE

Oh, my god, I could literally give up all other fragrances if it meant spending the rest of eternity with Indigo by Nest. This scent is absolutely fantastic and I cannot tell you how many compliments that I get when I am wearing it. This fragrance is perfect if you’re not into the overly floral aromas that many popular fragrances have and if you’re looking for a good deal on a full sized perfume. The notes of this fragrance are Moroccan Tea, Kashmir Wood, Cardamom, and Wild Fig, and Sephora categories this scent as being warm, aromatic, and mysterious. Also look at the freaking packaging, have you ever seen anything so stunning in your life? This scent is exclusive to Sephora.com and retails for $68 for the 1.7 once bottle.

MY TOP NIGHT FRAGRANCE

If you are looking for a fragrance that is unique, exotic, yet stll extremely feminine, then Alien by Mugler is for you. The top note in this fragrance is solar accord and I have no clue what that even is, yet the midtone notes of jasmine and cashmeran make this scent extremely seductive and inviting. I’m also not going to lie when I tell you that I am obsessed with the packaging, this perfume really looks like it came from another planet. Now don’t get scared off by the steaper price tag, a 2 OZ bottle lasts a long time. Just as a point of reference, I wore the 1.7 OZ Indigo everyday (literally every fucking day) and it lasted an entire year, and to me that was a very everyday fragerence. Alien could be worn during the day however, I think it has much more of an evening/night aroma to it.This fragrance retails for $120 for the 2 OZ and like every other item on this list, you can get your at Sephora.com

MY TOP WORK FRAGRANCE

Tom Ford is a master of fragrances and when I caught a whiff of Black Orchid, I couldn’t get the smell out of my head. If I had to describe Black Orchid in one word, it would be luxury. This fragrance is the Kardashian of the fragrance world, it rolls in high style and will give off an air of sophistication in a workplace environment. The top notes for this fragrance are black truffle, black orchid, and black plum, which when combined give off an earthy yet mature aroma. This fragrance is truly timeless yet I could see a college student impressing her boss at an internship with this perfume. The 1.7 OZ bottle retails for $120 at Sephora.com, but like a good pair of black pumps and a tailored blazer, this scent is truly a professional investment.

MY TOP DATE NIGHT FRAGRANCE

So it’s a pretty well-known fact that men love “food scented” perfumes. Now I am not talking about a perfume that smells like barbeque ribs or a Chipotle burrito bowl, but perfumes that have notes of vanilla, honey, and chocolate. Now let me introduce you to the best of both worlds, a perfume that will have your date thinking that you smell good enough to eat and one that you’re going to love as well. I first heard of this perfume, well because it’s actually kind of everywhere at the moment. When I was in Italy, all I saw on TV was the commercial for this perfume which made me want to know what all the fuss was about. Well my friends, this perfume smells like an expensive and indulgent coffee shop. The top note of this perfume is obviously coffee accord but when mixed with orange blossom and cedarwood essence it becomes something more complicated than your favorite Starbucks drink. It’s inviting, addictive, and perfect for a romantic dinner date or a frat party makeout. Get a 3 OZ bottle at Sephora.com for $115, which in my mind is a total fucking steal.

MY TOP WILD CARD FRAGRANCE

Alright, so at first glance this fragrance looks pretty insane but hear me out. No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you, Moschino actually created a perfume that freaky ressembles a bottle of Windex. Yet despite the packaging, this product couldn’t smell further from window cleaner. Fresh Couture by Moschino is fairly self-expainatory, it smells fresh without being redunant. I know that we have all smelled perfumes that smell like cotton or clean laundry, yet you don’t need to smell like your closet in order to impress your peers. The top notes for this fragrance are bergamot and mandarin, giving the perfume a bright and clean scent, while the midnotes of Ylang Ylang and Raspberry give this scent an exotic and youthful spin. Typically when you mix a bunch of fruity smells together, you are thrown back to adolescence yet this perfume is offbeat and perfect for a collegiate woman looking for something so wrong that it’s right. Snag the 1.7 OZ bottle for $62 (yet again, it feels like we are stealing because the deals are so damn good) at you guessed it, Sephora.com.
