3 Ways to Overcome Writer’s Block

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

As someone who loves to write and wants to eventually be a television and film writer in the future, I can say first hand there’s nothing more frustrating then having writer’s block. Some people view it as just being lazy or procrastinating, but it’s a real thing. Luckily there are ways to avoid it and beat it so you can keep on writing and creating!

Music

Music is one of the biggest factors for me in general, but especially when it comes to writing. Not only can music put your mind in a certain time frame or place, bit it can actually inspire you to continue your story or start something entirely new that you’re passionate about.

Reading

It’s been said that in order to be a good writer you need to read…a lot. If you seem to be stuck, go back to what inspired you originally to write and tell stories. For me, it’s Catcher in the Rye. I can always go back to that book in order to get to the source of my passion for the craft. After that, it’s smooth sailing from there.

Changing Location

This is a biggie in my books. For the most part, everyone writers in their room which had minimal outside light and pretty much zero amount of fresh air. Your mind is practically trapped and you can get easily distracted from the things surrounding you. My advice is to go to the beach, the park, the local coffee shop, anywhere that’s going to help you and your material rejuvenate.
