Top 4 Inspiring Celebrity Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

In honor of International Women’s Day this week we decided to introduce you to some of the most inspiring, females in the world of fame and glam. These women are not only incredibly talented in each of their respective fields, but they also work hard and with passion to make the world a better place, especially for young girls.

It is indubious that at the moment we are living in a time of grand changes particularly for us, women of all ages and nations. We fight for the rights for our bodies, clothes, religion, sex, education, careers. We fight for human rights. Sometimes it’s tough, sometimes it’s even dangerous but we are not the first ones, and probably not the last ones. Therefore, we would like to present to you some of the celebrity women who have been fighting for women rights for years now, before it became an everyday topic.

1. Diane Von Fürstenberg

This Belgian-American fashion designer gained a world-wide fame for designing the wrap dress in the 70s, which still is one of the most popular dress styles in the world. But what makes this woman truly special is her dedication to the promotion and support of strong women in all areas of life.

Von Fürstenberg is a director of The Diller which is a family foundation that supports non-profit organizations in such areas as education, health, human rights, and many more. Moreover, it also hosts the DVF Awards where each year they select four women who represent best “leadership, strength, and courage” in protecting women’s rights.

The designer also writes biographical self-help-empowerment books the latest of which is The Woman I Wanted to Be. In the book she shares some of the best life advice she’s received during her life, such as “The most important relationship in life is the one you have with yourself“, or “The biggest mistake a woman can make is not be herself in public or private”.

2. Karlie Kloss

A world class model, student, entrepreneur, YouTube star, baker – you name it, she is that. Not sure how much, but being friends with Diane von Fürstenberg definitely shaped Kloss’ view on women’s future opportunities!

Becoming one of the most important faces in the fashion industry at the age of 14 didn’t turn this young woman into yet another broken teenage celebrity. In fact, it looks like she saw more opportunities in being model than one might think. Kloss created Karlie’s Kookies which are a gluten and dairy-free cookies, proceeds from sales of which provide meals for children around the world.

In addition, Kloss’ great passion is computer science and coding which she also studies at NYU. The model believes that coding is the future of everything and encourages young girls to study it through her scholarship programme Kode With Karlie. The scholarship provides funding for studying computer science for a few months.

Also, Kloss is dating Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner  Ivanka Trump’s husband and one of Donald Trump´s advisors. Joshua actually took a part in Women’s March in Washington D.C. to protest Trump’s actions against women’s rights. WOW, right?

3. Melinda Gates

Does the name sound familiar? That’s because Melinda is a wife of Bill Gates, probably the most famous currently living person in the world! But don’t get me wrong, she’s more that just a billionaire’a wife. Melinda met Bill when she started working for Microsoft and she also is a fan of computer science, a field which she feels is in need of more women. Mrs. Gates thus leads a non-stop promotion campaign to encourage more young girls to pursue studying CS in university.

Also, Melinda is the co-founder of Bill & Melinda Foundation that fights poverty across the globe, as well as trying to provide better healthcare for people in developing countries. The results of the Foundation‘s work are actually extraordinary. Extreme poverty has decreased by 50% across the world in the last 25 years! The same results are shown in the decline of the number of child deaths under age five since 1990, and the Foundation has definitely played a part in this. Speaking of making a change in the world, right?

As for the women’s rights in particular, Melinda is very passionate about the supply of birth control to all women who want it in order for them to be able to provide the best life for their children and build the best possible life for the family. Although Mrs. Gates is a devout Catholic, she believes that contraceptives are one of the most crucial ways to achieve better life quality in the world, which has caused some uproar among the faithful Catholic community that believes contraceptives are just another word for murder of an unborn child. Based on the results of the Foundation, clearly this assertion is as wrong as it can be.

I personally encourage everyone to check the very inspiring latest statistics from Bill & Melinda Foundation to see that contrary to popular belief the world apparently is becoming a better place to live in.

4. Meghan Markle

In the past months actress Meghan Markle, best known for her role in television series Suits became one of the most Googled people due to her dating Price Harry of the British Royal Family. Beautiful and talented, no wonder she charmed one of the most eligible bachelors on the planet. However, there’s so much more to Markle than most people might know at the moment.

When just now some are speculating whether she might become the future Princess and take on all the royal duties, Markle has been practicing those “royal duties” of philanthropy and charity work for several years now.

The Canadian actress is a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada along which she traveled to Rwanda as a part of their Clean Water Campaign. She’s also an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights for the United Nations, as well as a spokesperson on the same issues for the international charity One Young World.

If that’s not enough, Markle also has a double degree in theater and international relations, and refers to herself as a “global citizen” trying to give back to the world and people. She also wrote an essay on what it’s like being a biracial woman in Hollywood.

P.S. These four women work hard each and every day to create a better future for other women and children across the world. However, let’s not forget those bright, strong, courageous and loving women that stand by each one of us no matter what, every single day since the moment we were born – our mothers! Don’t forget to send them some love on International Women’s Day.
