As the days slowly get shorter and the leaves turn in to beautiful red, yellow and orange shades, my skin starts to feel the cold wind’s effects and I can sense it getting thirsty and dry. This autumn, instead of contenting myself with using store bought body creams and butters, I decided to aim to make some myself. Not only would this allow me to get a nice and productive experience, but I would also be able to control all the ingredients that ended up in my jar. Lately I have been questioning the impact of what my daily artificial chemical dose is doing to my body. That’s why I chose to use completely natural and pure ingredients. Also, as my skin gets extremely dry in the winter, I now had an opportunity to try to choose some of the very moisturizing oils and butters to make my skin silky and happy. Here, I decided to use nourishing coconut oil, repairing oat oil and my all time favourite jojoba oil, and mix them all together with the creamy shea butter.

First step: Make sure to sterilize all the equipment by boiling them in water for a few minutes before using. Also, if you wish to keep the final product fresh and usable for as long as possible, make sure that there won’t be a single drop of water that gets in touch with your ingredients during the process.

The equipment you need:

  • 1 or 2 pots to heat your oils in. The best way to do this is to fill the bigger pot with water, place it onto a stove and put the other one on top of the boiling water to prevent the oils from burning. If you are only using one pot, make sure to heat it at a very low temperature.
  •  An electronic mixer
  •  A jar for your body butter

The ingredients:

As I studied the subject about making body butters, I realised that you can use basically almost any oils and butters to do it, even just pure coconut butter. Just keep in mind to add equal amounts of harder butters and softer oils in the mix, otherwise it will never harden in the fridge (been there, done that!). However, I decided to make mine with a blend of different moisturising and repairing oils that I purchased from Limepop shop (except for the coconut oil that I got from the local supermarket):

½ dl coconut oil

1 dl shea butter

0,25 dl oat oil (avena sativa)

0,25 dl jojoba oil

30 drops of essential lavender oil

Instructions:

1. Start with measuring all the oils and melting them in a pot.

2. Once the mixture has all melted, remove the pot from the heat and place it into a fridge for about one hour to cool down until it starts to harden.

3. Add the essential oils if you wish to use them.

4. Use the mixer to whip your cream until it has the consistency you are looking for. If you wish it to be firmer, just mix a bit longer.

5. Return your cream into the fridge to let it to set for about 10 minutes.

6. Store your body butter in a jar and use it as you would use any other body butter.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and wish you luck with making your own body butter!
