Campus Cutie: Fatim Diarra

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Year: 2nd

Major: Theology (I’m flirting with church history and systematic theology)

Hometown: Helsinki – born and raised. The first 6 years in Jakomäki and when my parents graduated we moved to Munkkiniemi.

Relationship status: Happily in a relationship

Interests: Education politics and equality. Drinking beer in a park during summertime. Creating excellent events. Food and coffee.

What’s your favorite book and why?

My absolute favorite is for a silly reason Sinuhe the Egyptian. Not because it’s such a mind-blowing book (although it’s a very good book) but because my 6th grade teacher said that I will not be able to read such a long book. He thought that because I’m dyslexic I should read simple books with simple letters. I did not agree and I read Sinuhe. I did not really understand what the point of the book was. And the process of reading it was painful. But I did it. I still read it every few years just to remind myself that I can achieve anything as long as I believe in myself and I’m ready to work hard for it.

If there was a movie made about your life, what genre would it be and who would play you?

Well this is easy! It would be an ironic and politically incorrect cartoon drawn by the secret love child of makers of South Park and the creators of Family Guy. The series would have a kickass soundtrack by Tenacious D. I would be basically Rocket Raccoon – the best superhero ever.

Where can we find you on a Saturday night?

Most likely in some event or party. I’m lucky to have so many friends who invite me to spend time with them. Otherwise I would sit at home watching Downton Abbey and eating cheese.

What did you want to become as a child?

An actor, dancer, performer or a singer. I have always been a bit on the dramatic side. As a kid my main focus was to be the center of attention.

What’s your favorite place in Helsinki?

Any and every park. This one tree in one specific park. I go there to read during summertime by myself.

Name three things that you are thankful for today.

That there is so much love in my life, tampons and that it’s Friday.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

If something feels good, it’s right. Just accept it. Don’t try to make things too complicated for yourself. The world will throw difficulties straight to your face, you will slip and sometimes you will fall. So why not make the foundation a happy, good and solid one, so that when you fall on your ass, there is something to fall on.

How would other people describe you in one word?

Boisterous.

Best class taken at the University of Helsinki so far?

Church history meets drama! Yep, my thoughts exactly. But the class was an excellent learning opportunity and the process was fun and motivating. The professor was just excellent and I loved every minute of it.

An English Philology major and a Campus Correspondent for Her Campus Helsinki. In addition to Her Campus, I love good food, travelling, politics and cute dresses. My real passion is cookbooks, which I own way too many, and some day I would love to write one myself.
